With all due respect to both Presidents Bush AND Obama, it was NASA that killed the program with their mismanagement, cost overruns, and fatal accidents.
Can't blame the manager that has to fire a dangerous employee.
BTW there's a pretty good documentary on how they could have attempted to save Columbia.....it would have been a close call, but Atlantis could have made it if everything worked out. But there was a senior NASA official that said, "nothing to worry about!" and buried the report when they brought the foam strike to her attention. 17 days later there were 7 dead astronauts and Space Shuttle parts scattered over 3-4 states. -
Not quite....
Bush began the end of the shuttle but also started the process for a replacement vehicle. Bush did not allocate new money to NASA, instead they were to use the money they had for the new shuttle development. Once Obama was in office all funding was stopped by congress.XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr. -
They did what Bush said they would do...run until 2010 or until the ISS was finished and start funding a replacement craft. Unfortunately the replacement didn't pan out, but 2011 was the last flight. 2003 was the second catastrophic explosion so the decision that STS was unsafe and not tenable in the long term was made______________________________________________I love lamp..

I think that in the coming decades a lifting body design like the Shuttle will make a comeback. There was nothing inherently wrong with the design and the Shuttle offers a lot of capability that is no longer available.I mean we the Space Force has gotta have a vehicle that can unload a whole platoon of jarheads with their "pyoo - pyoo" laser weapons right?

Alright. Let's fire this thing into the sky.

In somewhat related news Space X tested the successor to this rocket, the Starliner. It blew up. I hope that was all of their bad luck for a year or more.

Well...to be fair, it did do its three second test fire just fine before it blew up.

I would so do that if given the opportunity. Wow.

Great to be able to get into space on our own once again. Impressive across the board.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

I got chills during the launch, awesome to see.My son was more fixated on a lizard on our wall outside during it. He’s four

I'm certainly glad to see SpaceX have a successful launch today.
The launch I'm really looking forward to seeing is the Dream Chaser. I think they have 6 launches to ISS coming in the future. Unfortunately, they are unmanned resupply missions to ISS. Dream Chaser returns to Earth in a much more dignified manner, It lands on virtually any commercial runway of sufficient length.

I'm hoping Dream Chaser doesn't wind up being just a dream. -
Just watched the capsule docking with the ISS as well. Nearly on board.

I watched from the driveway with a slushie. Pretty cloudy and we just had a rain storm. We did get to see a couple glimpses between clouds. I was surprised at how small it looked compared to the many shuttle launches I have seen. The fire ball was noticeably smaller. Cant wait for a night launch again!
