I think it looks cool and I like the holes lining up with those in the firebox. If I didn’t have KABs for my other eggs I would definitely consider it.
-
Doesnt seem to me it would be any better than the stock grate. Not to mention is another product ripoff by BGE.

KAB let too many small pieces of charcoal fall through. Defeats the purpose if I have to shake the basket AND scrape the ashes out. Also wasted a lot of good charcoal. With the BGE version I no longer have to scrape, and it DOES increase airflow by creating space between the charcoal and the fire box.

This product is different enough to not seem like a direct rip off, unlike their multi-level grate systems.South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave

If the ash is not falling through to the bottom of the grill, doesn't it clog up the bowl and block air flow on a long cook? Doesn't some of it fall out anyway when you take the bowl out?Scraping out the ashes is not a big deal for me. I have a (clean) 99-cent cat litter box shovel that I use to catch things as I scrape out the bottom of the grill. The ash falls into the bucket below and the bigger pieces just go back into the basket.

I am so disappointed- loved this idea for my XL. I used it once for a 400 degree cook and the bottom warped so the divider no longer fits. I heard one other guy on another site with similar issues. So bummed out it looked good but the metal apparently is too thin for XL. Since i really wanted the divider issue I am hoping they will take it back.
-
I like mine and I started with the KAB on my XL. I have used it on all temp settings and have not had any issues with it warping. I can easily set up a 2 zone cook with the divider and it wastes less charcoal than the KAB.
-
I had that same thought, but for me, the KAB lets a lot of charcoal through during the cook as it burns down to a size to fall through it. And then some more when I remove it. It's not a big deal as I scrape the ash out anyway. It's a little more annoying when some thin but reusable pieces fall into my ash bucket when I'm shaking the ash out.rekameohs said:drumdudeguy said:

That said, I've really like the airflow of the KAB, so these are fairly minor complaints. Especially compared with the warping of this new product that others are reporting.LG BGE

Anything that falls into the ash during a hot and fast is going to burn anyway.....not like any any BTU's are lost. Not sure why everybody gets so worried about it.carrda04 said:

Does the kick ash can block air flow at all? From the pics it looks like it forms a tight seal instead of sitting on the bottom like I thought. I'm interested in the can for ease of cleanup, but almost $70 for a thin metal mixing bowl is going to take some convincing.

Oh never mind, I didn't realize it had a cut-out for the air flow. Now I'm interested.South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave

It doesn't block anything. The hole cut in the side is the same size as the lower firebox opening.SonVolt said:stlcharcoal said:

It's not a "thin metal mixing bowl" either. It's a much heavy gauge. -
My rusty KABs are resting in the deck box, I went back to the OEM grates. I can get the heat I need quickly, and temp seems to be more easily controlled over long cooks. Just my experience...

The third generation are stainless steel, but I have the older steel ones like yours......they have some rust on them, but it's not like I'm grilling on them. They have worked just fine for the last 4 yrs.rifrench said:My rusty KABs are resting in the deck box, I went back to the OEM grates. Also, the temp control really has nothing to do with a fire grate or basket, that's all the draft door and chimney cap. All the "sewer plate" fire grate does is limit the high end temp--it doesn't help control, stabilize, or do anything other than hold the charcoal above the ash pan. The set amount of air comes in, passes through it, just like the KAB, our old cross hatched grate, or any other grate.
A lot of people say the basket uses more charcoal, not true either.....not possible unless you're running a higher temp. -
Kick Ash Can has been strategically suggested to my wife for father's day. Fingers crossed! Once I can lift and dump I probably won't care at all!stlcharcoal said:
