Underbite over time

My large egg’s gotten an underbite as the hinge has gotten older. It’s a 2016. I really noticed it after converting over to a Rutland gasket. Is there any easy way to adjust the hinge to correct it? Would replacing my hinge with the new style be the way to go?

    Overbite/Underbite: A quote from a poster

"I called this morning and spoke to Dewayne at BGE HQ Customer Service.  He was extremely helpful and guided me through the steps to level out the top.  It was extremely simple to do, even for someone who didn't understand the way these things are put together.

So basically here's what was the problem and what I did.  The first problem was that the lower band was not wrapped around evenly - it was lower in the rear than in the front.  He explained to me that the lower band should come right up to the edge of the lower gasket all the way around the lower half.  So I loosened the carriage bolt on the lower rear band and GENTLY tapped along the band using a block of wood and a rubber mallet until the band was placed evenly around the whole bottom.  Then I tightened the band.  From that point, the underbite had improved significantly, but there was still a bit of unevenness along the planes where the gaskets met and it still did not pass the dollar bill test.  In fact, the gap on the rear side between the gaskets was slightly worse, but I wasn't worried because I knew there were a couple more steps to

Next step was to adjust the front to back placement to fine tune the sitting of the top to the bottom.  There are two slotted acorn nuts on the top part of the hinge (above the spring) on both sides of the top that needed to be loosened so that I can 'wiggle' the top into a centered position.  So I loosened all 4 nuts, wiggled it into position, then tightened.  Now the top was centered properly (no under or overbite), but there was still unevenness on the plane of contact - in other words, it still failed the dollar bill test.

The last step was to somewhat repeat the first step (loosening the carriage bolt) except for the upper band.  Wherever there was the largest gap between the two gaskets, I GENTLY tapped the band upward which essentially pushed the lid downward by it's own weight.  Once I saw that the upper band was positioned in such a way that the entire top part of the egg sat nicely and evenly on the bottom, I tightened the carriage bolt of the top band and vuala!  It was fixed.  Dollar bill test passed all the way around the egg.  No more underbite (or overbite). “

  • Thanks for that, Ron. I never got my domes and bases aligned properly after installing my Rutland (not the Rutland’s fault; love mine!), so I will have to go through this process.

Got it pretty good still has a minor underbite but better than it was I got it set perfectly but once I opened the egg it seemed to move back a little bit. I realized those two bolts on each side above the spring can’t be completely tightened or it won’t open at all so I’m guessing it’s all about finding a balance between loose enough to open but tight enough to keep those two bars from angling back.

NO offense, but what you say is an underbite really is no big deal IMHO!

For MANY of us owners of "older" BGEs and EVEN brand new ones you need to realize that BGEs are not fine China! These are ceramic grills, made in what is call "slip molds". That means VERY wet ceramic clay is poured into poreous molds and left until much of the water is absorbed into the molds. Then that "greenware" is moved and left to dry in the air before being fired in kilns. The domes and bases are NOT made as one piece so thinking that your dome and base are going to match perfectly will NOT happen.

What he said, most would be happy with that under-bite!

No offense taken! Oh yeah I realized that long ago especially after my original base broke and I replaced it with a new one. The underbite I had before I adjusted that hinge was over a half inch so it’s definitely better now.

Your egg is less than 5 years old...you could try to get a set of replacement bands under warranty. I would give it a try. I agree the dome and base may not be the exact same size...but if it is shifting it may only get worse. I just replaced my old style assembly...got sick of messing with them and they were so janky I was afraid the dome was going to fall out one day. With the new bands my dome and bass line up perfectly (for now).

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Nice! Does BGE send you the new style bands as a replacement? Also do the new bands work with having a Rutland instead of the felts on top and bottom?

LOL! BTW how's that white haired Father of yours? Did he ever get back to egging, or did he sell his eggs to buy more kites?

Tell him hi for me! Oh...and thank him :anguished:   for getting me hooked on Redd Mudd which Lindys quit selling as soon as he moved to AZ!

The old man is doing well.  Still has his eggs and is looking to sell his MM and get a medium.  He has slowed down on kites, but gotten heavy into Jeeps and 4wheelin.

Yeah, Red Mud is hard to come by out here.  We order it by the case and split it.  Speaking of which, we are do for another order.

I will definitely tell him hello for you!
