Tongs and spatula

Do you have a specific set of tongs and a specific spatula that you think is the best. I have a old spatula that I use and I just recently started using tongs on some things. The tongs I use is an old pair my wife had. I have a large and extra large bge so I will need something with a little length to it. Thanks.

I use a pigtail flipper more than anything. Also have long sets of tongs, from Charbroil I think, that are nice for veggies and such~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

I think whatever works for you is good. I do have some tongs that I like - and I’ve had some that annoyed me. I couldn’t tell you where I bought them though - most likely at Target or somewhere.Coleman, Texas

I like tongs with rubber tips for veggies and things that the sharper edges of some metal tongs rip up a bit. I should probably invest in some longer ones for grilling since I regularly singe my hand and arm hairs.
These look decent with little feet to prop them up on so the tips don’t touch the surface of what you set them on.

find a tongs with the length you like. Grab your finger with them and twist. If it hurts. They'll work great. A lot of them bend when something is grabbed. My spatula is the one my father used and must be 40-50 years old...

Have not found a spatula that I really like yet, but I have a few tongs that I got from the grocery store which I use all the time, for those I just look for length and no rubber tips.Dave

All the others I've bought break at the hinge. These are solid. Also note, they don't "lock" closed. That's one fewer break point.
I bought two.Plymouth, MN -
ATK just did a comparison of tongs yesterday; winner was Oxo Good Grips (which it usually is). Mine are similar but without plastic grips for your hands.

My tongs came from a basic BBQ to ol l set that I picked up at Walmart years ago. They actually work pretty well. My MIL bought me a VGK novelty spatula with a bottle opener on the end from Kroger that is pretty heavy and works for me.Las Vegas, NV

Do yourself a favor and check out your local restaurant supply store if possible. I have several sets of Edlund brand tongs that are excellent. They are bullet proof, hold up well in the washer, don’t rust, etc. I picked up a spatula from Ace Mart (store of choice) called Hell’s Handle. It has proved to be a solid choice. I like to buy once with stuff like this. Hope this helps.XLBGE, SS tableMcKinney, TX.

For my XL the longest tongs I could fine. The plus side is they are from Ceramic Grill Store so the quality is great.

Tongs are never where I need them or somehow get lost. I picked these up on clearance a few years ago to fix the issue. I still have a couple sets left.

I manage without a spatula for most cooks. For lifting whole roasts, spatched chickens or butts, the 10-in Fat Daddio is my favourite...

I rarely say to get BGE stuff but if they still sell these I have had them probably 8-10 years and still work great. The tongs are nice and long and you can tell how sturdy they are.

Thanks everybody. One more question....at least for tonight. Some of the tongs recommended had Teflon ends on them to pick up the food. Does this help, hurt or not make a difference.
-
The ATK comparison I referenced above, were pretty much against teflon ends. If you're flipping bacon in a teflon pan, on your stove, that may change the answer. On the Egg, I'd go metal edges, every time.Chef Boy RC said:Thanks everybody. One more question....at least for tonight. Some of the tongs recommended had Teflon ends on them to pick up the food. No they don’t, unless they are set on the grill like a steak. I’ve been using the same tongs with soft tips for years and the only damage to them is from my wife cutting a tip off. No issues at all with them burning handling food while grilling at high temps on the egg.DoubleEgger said:

Well I’ve had to toss about 4 pair of Teflon ones due to burning and the Teflon flaking off. Since I’m obviously wrong in your opinion and you say it never happens, would you care to reimburse me for the ones that I had to throw away for food safety reasons?Cornholio said:

Soft tip tongs (Silicone) are what you're referring to. @DoubleEgger referred to teflon, which at high temps is highly toxic and it will flake off.~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

I misspoke. The oxo tongs that I tossed were actually nylon and only good to 400F according to the specs on Amazon. Not good for the grill at all. I still have some that I use for prep but never with heat. I probably have 6-8 pair of the metal tipped ones now for the grill, frying etc.ColtsFan said:

I agree 100% on the Edlunds. I have 5 or 6 pair. So if I have a couple of pairs in the dishwasher I still have a couple to use. I also have a couple Hell's handle spatulas that I like.XLBGE, LBGE, MBGE, SMALL, MINI, 2 Kubs, Fire Magic Gasser
