At first glance I thought it was a row of toilets, so I’m with Fred on this one.

It kind of reminds me of that scene from No Time For Sergeants.

No offense meant, but eggs are not painted. After the pieces of “greenware” have been fired then they are cooled and then coated with a liquid glaze and then they are re-frired. BTW “greenware” is a pottery term for products and has nothing to do with Big Green Egg.

If they don't paint the glaze on, how does it get there?

Spreading the liquid glaze with a brush may mean “paint” to some people, but the OE poster referred to that unglazed fired greenware as “unpainted eggs”. All I was trying to do was educate future readers...come on, man, cut some slack!

  • I bet they spray on that green glaze and then send back to the oven. It’s so uniform.

I heard from a totally reliable source that the whiter the ceramic is the better quality it is.

    So you're saying they're unpainted?

  • So BGEs are spray-on glazed green, definitely not painted green.  I learn something new every day on this forum!

If they're glazed then they are technically unpainted right? I think the OP is technically right.

An underglaze can be brushed on or dipped for color. An over glaze is what gives it the sheen. Either method is effective.....my guess in a production facility, dipping would be the approach. That said, I have not and do not plan to read / watch / research this.

Got to tour a Whirlpool factory in the Twin Cities when I was in college (~1982).  They painted their refrigerators, etc by hanging them in a huge silo, while long vertical bars with a spinning disk at the bottom moved up and down.  Glaze was routed down the bar, and had a slight static charge to it; when it dropped onto the spinning disk, it was flung onto the appliances, which had a slight opposite charge, causing the glaze to stick on.  Once coated they were then fired to set the glaze.
We were told the process allowed them to use much less solvent to get the glaze onto the appliances; pretty cool!
Touring the Bessemer steel foundries was even cooler, but that's another post. :)
