Bands warped mid-cook??

Did turbo ribs yesterday. I go to open the egg at about the 90min mark, and hear a creaking sound. Took a peek at the ribs, and then the egg wouldn't shut.

Haven't messed with the bands yet to see if they just need to be adjusted. No pizza or other high temp cooks, so I don't think the bands would have just slipped. Maybe its finally time to get a new band assembly.

My large did that, I had failed to lube the hinge mechanism pivot points in a while. Try that first.

I know on the older style hinges, if the hinge bolts came loose in the back it would cause this sort of “locked up” experience. That’s where I would be looking.

That’s wild! It’s a well used egg too. I’ve wondered about spending more money, and I might need to change my bands prophylactically.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++Austin, Texas. I'm the guy holding a beer.

Mine has done the same a few times. there is always a few of the hinge pivot bolts that have tighten up. I loosen them a bit and all is good.

Dude if you are putting a condom on your bands, that might be a problem. I know a previous post mentioned lubrication but maybe try some WD-40.sumoconnell said:That’s wild! It’s a well used egg too. I’ve wondered about spending more money, and I might need to change my bands prophylactically. -
WD40 is actually a degreaser and not a lubricant. Fun fact.Boileregger said:

Agree, WD does not last. I use oil designed for salt water fishing reels.pgprescott said:

only takes a drop or 2 on each joint.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Had the same experience mid-cook. Loosened anything associated with the hinge assembly to get the dome shut then sorted it out later. Only one time it happened.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. off topic reply here, but I assume you know your dome is a quarter turn to the right not that that would mess with your bands. Or maybe you did that on purpose so you can read the thermometer from inside your home?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Thanks for the tips, everyone. The hinge/pivot was indeed locked up, so a bit of WD40 and all is good now. Kinda odd that it would lock up during a cook like that.
The folks who make WD40 claim it is "a blend of lubricants" but point taken about how long it'll last. @Photo Egg could you throw out any product names for the lubricant you use?#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

Isn’t that a sign that the poor thing is overworked and needs another companion to share the load? Large, XL, XXL, XXXL etc. Still time to email Santa.

Thanks, Darian. I'll get some. I'm sure I can find some other uses for it too.Photo Egg said:

I like the way you think, but you haven't seen the rest of the yard. I would have thought about just using some spray silicone, but this is a great idea. I have a couple of these guys laying around for me reels too. Thanks for sharing!Photo Egg said:

with the bands, check the studds where the hinge actually mounts to the bands, ive gone thru the lubrication thing on the hinge only to find out too late a year later that those studds were working loose. they may eventually let loose or break which destroys the band. might just be the hinge but thats another possibility where just lube is just a bandaide

Mine did the same thing. Had to loosen everything to get it shut. Would prop lid open with ash tool in order to finish the cook. I worked on it several times afterwards but could never get the underbite fixed so new band system it is.

I had this happen several times with my large. Each time I would lubricate, loosen, & readjust. I got tired of doing that and bought the new style bands. No issues at all since then.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check the hinge more carefully. Looks like all roads are pointing to getting new bands.fishlessman said:with the bands, check the studds where the hinge actually mounts to the bands, ive gone thru the lubrication thing on the hinge only to find out too late a year later that those studds were working loose. they may eventually let loose or break which destroys the band. might just be the hinge but thats another possibility where just lube is just a bandaide#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
Get a can of PB Blaster at Home Depot. WD-40 is a terrible lubricant
-
WD-40 was designed as a “water displacer”, and when I was a GM mechanic in 1974, we were told to use it on the inside of distributor caps. Especially when you had a wet engine or someone drove thru deep water and it splashed up on the cap. It dried out the cap, points & condenser, and the engine ran smooth again. Also used to rinse out padlocks. It is worthless as a lubricant though!
