    WD-40 was designed as a “water displacer”, and when I was a GM mechanic in 1974, we were told to use it on the inside of distributor caps.  Especially when you had a wet engine or someone drove thru deep water and it splashed up on the cap.  It dried out the cap, points & condenser, and the engine ran smooth again.  Also used to rinse out padlocks.  It is worthless as a lubricant though!
    I’ve used WD-40 inside distributor caps a few times. It works.
