Safe Grill Brushes

Hola,

So with the new "safe brush" movement and all, what's everyone using as their preferred grill brush?  Last thing I want to do is go cough cough cough after a bite of brisket and end up as the subject of a social media post.

Thanks everyone.
The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

What is the "Safe brush movement"? I just use foil. Or nothing.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Folks are swallowing grill brush wires and they are getting lodged somewhere in their digestive tract......maybe none of the BGE group...might be isolated to the Primo and Kamado Joe groups.  BGE folks are just that smart.  :)

Ball of foil and/or tongs.  I really need to make one of those wood scrapers.

The Billy Bar is a cool product.  Early on when I still used the OEM BGE grill, the Lone Ranger has made a grid lifter that doubled as a grill cleaner for the BGE stock grill.  It worked great until I upgraded to the CGS two-tier system, which is flat.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Not sure what it's called but I use a wooden grill scraper. It starts out looking like a paddle, then you notch it out when you use it on the hot grate.<if that makes sense...
I like it. It works great!

I know about that. That's why I use foil. Just never heard of a "safe brush movement".

I also like the Billy Bar.  I put the grill on over hot charcoal to soften things up for a few minutes and then use the billy bar to clean the grill

I still use a brush fairly often but only the Weber ones I don’t buy the cheap ones. I also got this recently and it works good.

Thanks!  Is this considered a safe brush?  I like it.

I don’t know if any are 100% safe but this one has solid metal as scrapers not thin little bristles. This comes up pretty much yearly here for as long as I can remember. Just to be safe I always put one of my Pitt mitts on and run my hand across the area after I brush it to hopefully knock anything off it something did ever break loose. It’s sad I’ve never used foil but most say it works good.
  • @Lit I had one of those and it eventually fell apart like a regular grill brush

Tried one like above, didn't clean very well. Tried a wood paddle, really did not like that. I went back to the dangerous grill brush. I just look at the grate before I put meat on. I also go with 'the grain' so I only have 1 cross bar to hit. I have yet to find a bristle come off. May use a ball of foil to follow up the brush.

  • I still use the cheap ones that fall apart to do the initial cleaning, then follow up with a pad, foil, etc.

I have used a heavy duty welding brush for years. I have never lost a bristle, but if one did fall out, they are big enough that you can't miss seeing them. Strong enough to get baked on crud of the grill, too.

I thought that the point of those is that you *want* it to get worn down.  The grill puts grooves in the scraper which helps the scraper become more effective.

I love my wooden scrapers but I wouldn't want to have to keep breaking them in.

Here's the one I use for my gas grill.

Fine! To each his own. I made mine from scrap and in all these years now I'm only on my second row of cut off holes! But, hey, I'm a retired dude and taking the few minutes it took to make it (fun) and trim it later (fun) didn't bother me.

Agree, but when the grooves get too deep the teeth won't be able to get pass the bottom braces in one smooth sweep. Some trimming, sanding or filing to shorten the claws should work.

  • Buy these for $2.99 each on e-bay (China).  They last a long time and don’t shed wire bristles. Do a good job on the SS grates on my egg!

Good point!  The grates on my Weber only have braces on the very edge and the scrapers used for my other grates haven't worn down enough for me to run into that yet.

I use the combo of these three. Never use the wire bristles embedded in wood or plastic
