Road Trip Food?

Guys me and a buddy are planning a trip to Montana. I'm doing everything possible to avoid eating thr typical fast food places .. I've lost 11 lbs and want to keep it off on this trip...

So what are some recommendations...not necessarily crazy healthy foods but want to avoid the greasy deep fried crap.

Mom is making us pimento cheese
I have a 3 foot log of smoked summer sausage going into the cooler....what else can we pack

  • Isn’t Montana a great place for trout fishing. I love a great grilled or sautéed trout.

No processed meat but time to smoke turkey and ham for travel.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

Buy a little weber kettle or an akorn jr and eat like you normally do.

Fruit, nuts, trail mix, beef jerky for the road and hunt.
  • beef jerky, pork skins instead of chips, lots of water...v8 juice,...

Pick up plenty of smelly drifters, you'll hardly eat a bite.

The hardest thing is to avoid eating and snacking when bored.  You're not hungry, you are just bored. I'd bring gum and focus on avoiding snacks when bored.  Reality is with that much sitting, you need less calories in a day.

I have that trouble when flying.. I try and drink water as much as possible and skip the meals.. I'm not to successful at it but I know what I should do.

@milesvdustin I can't do the red bulls. I crash HARD on those once the first rush wears off (about an hr and a half)...doesn't matter if I drink 3 or 4 more I'm done after that first one

My go to’s would be beef jerky, trail mix, cubed cheese (if you have an ice chest), and nuts. Plenty of water. Now, if your buddies stop at Whataburger, you may be kinda screwed. 5 hour energy also has “less crash” for me than Red Bulls
  • What @sumoconnell said with plenty of water. You can get grilled chicken or salad at fast food places. My goal on trips is to not eat more often than regular.

If this is an option, the Weber Go Anywhere is a fantastic little grill. You can crank out some great grub on it. Comes in gas or charcoal versions.

I just did some pork tenderloins a few days ago, sliced up the left overs and have em in a zip lock in the fridge and snack on that.  Also I have some left over bacon, and I discovered a block of pepper jack cheese.  The three of those together is a winning combo, my friend.

The number 11 grilled chicken sandwich at Whataburger is pretty good and low calorie, just ditch the fries.

Pack a cooler and bring your own stuff, we do that whenever we travel because it is tough to find fast food the kid likes.  In addition to some of the things already mentioned, sliced flank steak is great right out of a bag, or on a tortilla with salsa and cheese.

As far as snacks, definitely trail mix and nuts.  Dried fruit.  You can also prep a bunch of hard boiled eggs, they’ll last forever in the cooler, just peel when you’re ready.  I keep some those shelf stable tuna packets at my office to add to my lunch or as a snack, just need a fork.

You're wanting to avoid fried foods but starting out with pimento cheese and a 3-foot summer sausage?    ;)

Apples and tangerines travel well in a cooler.

Bags of skinnypop popcorn (you’re going to snack)

Lower salt sunflower seeds, like bigs or spitz

Chick-FiL-A grilled nuggs decent FF choice

    beef jerky, skip the sausages

buy some deli turkey for sandwiches or make your own

stop at a decent bbq joint and get some sliced to go, keep in cooler.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER
  • Life is short. You've already lost 11 lbs. I would enjoy the road trip to the fullest and continue the diet when I got back home.
I like eating at places that I can't find around here and my guess is that I would find quite a few if I were to drive that far West.
    Enjoy your trip!

A lot of the food mentioned is very high in salt (including the fast food restaurant "chicken" on a salad) which can  cause problems.  We have made over 25 coast to coast road tips and have found one of the best items to keep available is mixed nuts. We buy the large jar of them at Costco (the ones without salt, but they also have one with salt if that is your preference).  We eat a decent breakfast, and when we get hungry at lunch time, we eat a few ounces of mixed nuts.  They are high protein and easy to eat in the car.  Once we're settled for the night, we eat a decent dinner and try to find a  locally owned restaurant.

Many hard cheeses don't need refrigeration. In fact, are better without.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Nope, all vacations.  We typically spend 45 days on the road on one of these trips.  Been in all states except Hawaii - haven't figured how to get there by car.  Our 2 longest trips were to Alaska and the Canadian provinces in that area.  Lots to see in the US and Canada.
