works nicely, not sure why it says for 2008 or newer eggs on the box, this egg is older
will have to get this egg up higher now, with it opening lower its not usable without taking a knee

I installed the new band assembly on my LBGE last month and agree with the ease of use and the reduced dome opening. The more restrictive opening range presents a bit of a challenge for me when using the PSWOO and extender but nothing insurmountable. FWIW-

years ago i did a cook with two briskets and two butts, will never do that cook again but i dont think it would come close to fitting with this band. with it sitting on the ground you cant see the food on the grid nowlousubcap said:I installed the new band assembly on my LBGE last month and agree with the ease of use and the reduced dome opening. Being the problem solving guy you are, let alone the metal fabricator you are, then any chance you see a way to alter that band to overcome the narrow opening problem?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

with the way it slides back i believe they limited the height to avoid a greater tipping potential. the old style was close to tipping without the dome sliding back. bge must have made the decision to fix the dome centering under/over bite problem that they were getting deluged with calls on. add that big handle and its even a bigger sight/viewing problemRRP said:Being the problem solving guy you are, let alone the metal fabricator you are, then any chance you see a way to alter that band to overcome the narrow opening problem?

Thanks for your explanation, Michael! I and I'm sure others appreciate it as well.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

I need to buy new bands for both mine. Looked at them at ACE Hardware yesterday and they're $139. Didn't pull the trigger because I have a coupon at home.

It has taken me a while to get used to the new opening and quite frankly, im still not excited about it. It is what it is, though...

Guess I'm quite happy with my spring assist bands and I don't understand why people change. If it's just underbite and overbite there are ways to tweak getting over those or at least minimizing the issue.JethroBodeen said:It has taken me a while to get used to the new opening and quite frankly, im still not excited about it. The new band helps me from breaking my chimney cap because it no longer goes back far enough for it to fall off."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

The only reason I changed was rust. I am right on the coast and the salt air is thick. Other wise I wouldn't have..RRP said:

There should never be a time that you open the egg with the ceramic cap on.YukonRon said:The new band helps me from breaking my chimney cap because it no longer goes back far enough for it to fall off. -
my first band was circa 2001/2002, originally made in mexico. different springs, prone to warp out and eventually you couldnt open it. bge swapped it out for me after ten years no charge. this new one rotted out, fell apart and the lower assembly fell out and tweaked the whole setup. it needed a full rebuild, sandblast, paint, it may have been easier to build a new oneRRP said:

I have opened my dome many times with the ceramic cap on. Has never come close to falling off. 10 years now.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Fully agree and mine with no felt so what. Just don’t open the lower vent as much.RRP said:

Never had any issues with the ceramic top going anywhere on the old banded LBGE- would routinely open (top on) the day after the cook to remove the drip pan collections and xfer lump the the SBGE.Came by the new band assembly when the true stability of the LBGE was pushed beyond the limits around 8 weeks ago. Dome open, 400*F fire rolling, trying to shut the lower vent the last 1/4" or so to get the air flow in the open dome and a level bed of hot coals for a paella cook. Met some good resistance and when giving the vent another shot to close all the way the LBGE went south. Base landed in a mulched bed and was fine-dome was toast. Grabbed garden hose-killed the fire. Fired up SBGE and with creativity finished a paella cook (15.5" pan) within around 5 minutes of target time. Don't need that ride again.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.
