Mine was at 400° direct in about 10mins tonight.  Lit with a handheld propane torch

Thanks! That's what I'm looking for. I have an XL and for weeknight cooks just seems to take so long to heat up.  With kids activities we are eating later and later.  Small could have enough space and can get one for $350 right now with warranty.

I regularly feed 2 adults and 2 1/2 kiddos off my small. You’ll probably want to check into the HighQ charcoal grate if you do buy it.

+1 with @Mattman3969 on the high-que grate.  I also went with the with Woo and stone from CGS.  Had that set-up before landing the SBGE so can't comment on how it works w/o the above.  Regardless, it is a hacker cooker for sure.  FWIW-

  • Using a looflighter my Minimax is there in 5-10 min indirect
  • 350 for a warranted small I would own it already
3 months ago I would have as well.  Out of work at the moment so it's a no go.  Was trying to convince myself but just can't.

I have a small and a large and I find the large lights easier and is ready to cook faster than the small.  My small seems to be choked down and it is stubborn to get a clean fire burning. I use the large 90% of the time.

$350 is a great price but IMO I wouldn't let faster heat up times be a deciding factor. I would consider a lump reducer for your XL.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

when i had a small getting it to 400 was fairly quick but pretty much the same time as the large. getting the small to 750 was a long wait, thats about as high as it would go and it took about 45 minutes to get there. its not a searing machine as some claim, the vents are too small

/shrug mine is a killer searing machine and will wrap the thermometer.  Make sure you have either a high que grate or a kick ash basket and take the top daisy wheel off. Leave the bottom wide open (no screen) and it will get hotter than you can use

to be fair i bought mine before the aftermarket grates were available when the small first came out. it really needs the aftermarket grates

  • Put the charcoal grate from your large/medium/mini max in the small. It will make it take off like a rocket. It took me years of having a slow performing small to figure it out.
  • Love mine and had no problems with it heating up in its stock configuration. I’ve got a kick ash basket, smoke ware cap and CGS woo now and use it more than my large. Perfect for week night cooks. I feed two adults and two teenagers with it easily.
