pantry shelf suggestions?

I have the white wire rack shelves in my pantry and I hate them. Bottles or jars fall over, knocking down a dozen other bottles with it. I want to upgrade them this fall.

I am thinking about just heading to southeastern salvage or something similar, but some shelving on discount, paint or stain, and hang out. Any reason not to do that? Any better suggestions or ideas?

They work pretty well to keep things organized, and so you can see more than what is at the edge of the shelf.

We've also added a bunch of bins/tubs/boxes/etc to store things in. We find that these work great for like items that come in their own packages. A box for a few different packs of rice, a box for dried beans/lentils, a box for dried pasta, etc. That way it is contained and easy to get in and out of the pantry. I may need to dig a bit on the counter to get to exactly what I need, but that is a lot easier than digging through bags on a shelf.

We use some similar risers and we also have some baskets as well that we group like things into - for instance we have one plastic basket that has honey, syrups and sweeteners. All odd size and shape containers, but easy to manage in a basket.

you could have shatterproof glass cut to sit on the wire racks in a couple areas where you have the bottles, it will still let some light shine thru.

i use something like this for dried herbs, dried pepper, pastas, rice etc

I’ve built some before with 3/4” birch plywood and a face board. Pretty simple project. I had HD rip the plywood with their panel saw.

I have the shelves like above which are nice so we can see what is in the back. We also use these on the rest of the shelves. No problems so far.

I took the doors off ours and opened it up a foot on the top and 6” on each side. Took all the wire shelves out and put the adjustable height tracks with melamine board. It’s a little messy right now.

You can buy the melamine in 4x8 sheets and rip down on your table saw (or tracksaw. Then use an iron to apply the edging, and trim with a sharp chisel. Makes some nice shelves!
