OT: Tiki Torch Question

I've never used tiki torches. Typically I use coleman camping lanterns to light my porch on occasions I want low light, and use string lights otherwise.
Last fall, I bought a few table top tiki torch brand torches on clearance. They kinda look like WWI hand grenades, have a stone base with a stainless insert for the fuel. The problem is I cannot keep these things lit. I fill them with fuel, make sure the wick is saturated, then light them. They end up burning through the wick in a few minutes then go out, what am I doing wrong?

If you are using the wicks that come with the torch, they are typically made out of cotton which burns up until there is not enough wick sticking up to keep burning. If you let it cool, and pull more wick up(like 1/4" or so) and relight, it will burn until the wick burns down to the bas of the lid and it will go out again. Best suggestion is to toss the wicks that come with the torch, and look for the replacement wicks made out of fiberglass....they are typically stocked near the torches at the big box store or Wally-World. I tossed all my stock wicks probably 5 or 8 years ago, replaced them all with fiberglass and the fiberglass wicks are still going strong. They last forever! Good luck...

We use solar lanterns thar fold flat from goal zero. 3 settings of light brightness, thus 3 different lengths of battery time.

This is it flat....
Low setting....does a great job.
We bought a couple for backpacking and liked them so well we got a few more."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I'll have to try the fiberglass wicks. I appreciate the tip for the solar lights, but the appeal of torches is keeping bugs away. Thanks guys!Kansas City, KansasSecond hand Medium BGE, Second hand Black Kamado Joe Classic, Second hand Weber Kettle, Second hand Weber Smokey Mountain

We use these - hang from hooks around our deck and burn citronella oil in them (tiki torch oil)THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER -
We tried out a company called Mosquito Joe...tenpenny_05 said:I'll have to try the fiberglass wicks. I appreciate the tip for the solar lights, but the appeal of torches is keeping bugs away. Thanks guys!
Lawn spraying for gnats, mosquitoes and ticks.
I was very skeptical of any results they told me to expect.
We live in mosquito - gnat city because of our proximity to wetlands and the river...
What a difference.
We can sit out all night without the problem of those bugs , where before, after 7:00 you could not go out side.
We got our yard back. Worth every penny.
You might want to try that.
