OT - Tips For An Impeccable Lawn

Tip 1.  Don’t overcut your lawn.  It’s good for the roots to let it grow.  I just cut my backyard for the first time (June 3rd).  I took this sitting on a John Deere lawn tractor.



Tip 2.  Sharp blades?  Fahgedabowdat! Why bother taking good metal you paid for off your blades?  I just paid $65 for a set, but I haven’t installed them yet.  I’m thinking about returning them because these are working pretty good.



Tip 3.  Enjoy the fruits of your labours.  If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well!

    mmmmnnn, me thinks you should have cut that "hayfield" last week. On top of that, I think you might want to go back to over lapping, plus cross lapping. With my small moveable mowable 3/4 acre yard I mow mine in 4 patterns crisscrossing and have for years now.

    @JNDATHP Everytime I visit my friends in Vegas, I grimace with great envy when I see their carefree lawns.  Makes me want to move there.  I have four hours of work ahead of me tomorrow, and that's starting after 5pm.   :|

    Fred, you're not mowing, you're "threshing".  And my Dad's JD had a crack just about exactly like yours!  
     
    Regarding an Impeccable Lawn: All of my lawns, save for Albuquerque, were mostly nice Kentucky Bluegrass but then got slowly, but unstoppably, invaded by fescue.  I did read on the intranetz (so it MUST be true!) that if you lightly brushed the tops of the fescue (which grows faster/taller than KB) before mowing the next day, with RoundUp, it would kill off the fescue and allow the thin grass to fill in.  
    I haven't tried this yet, especially with the recent court rulings against Monsanto.  If YOU'VE tried it, please post your results here (quickly, before you die).

    My old John Deere before I got rid of it had a crack EXACTLY like that. Epoxy'd it and a new crack formed parallel to the original.

    While in Colorado, My Beatiful Wife took me to the Denver Botanical Gardens. 
    While there, they had an ongoing analysis of the type of grass that offered benefits for our environment.
    The type they were so high on was buffalo grass, due to its low water requirement, low fertilizer needs, and limited vertical growth, meaning cutting once a month.
    The root systems were also ideal for soil protection and enrichment.
    So I think I have a spot on my lawn where I might try it out.
    Anyone with any experience with this strain?

    My buddy asked me if I was going for a second cutting tonight.  Ordinarily I wouldn’t think of such a thing.  However, my MIL arrived last night for an extended stay and since my Detroit Tigers are sucking it,  I’m seriously considering it.  This is us playing “Tag” last year.

    @YukonRon several neighbors have put this in and it seems to do well.  We also see it in commercial landscaping around here d/t the water conservation benefit.

    edit: Maybe a little less frequently with her Mom here.  Another reason I look forward to my MIL's visit.
