Bought my XLBGE used back in 2014 - it had the old style hinges/band assembly. Always had issues with the lid crabbing sideways when opening/closing, overbite, underbite, etc.

Finally ordered the new style - world of difference. Much easier to open/close, aligned perfectly.

Definitely recommend if you still have the old style.

I had the same issue with my Large lid.  Ordered a  replacement assembly before I left.  Hope it fixes my problems.  I tried all the other methods to fix the  issues and finally decided it was time to stop playing around. Assembly will be the day after I get back.

My XL was purchased in mid-2015. Do I likely have new or old style hinge and how would I tell?

Does your upper band/handle have the vertical risers that go over the rim of the lid as shown in the picture above?

If not, you have the old style.

@CTMike No, I do not. Thanks for the info, I'll look into the new style. I've never been happy with how far my dome opens.

@JohnInCarolina things like this are easy-peasy for guys who have their own cement mixer in their back yard.
LBGE (still waitin' for my free T-Shirt), DIgiQ DX2 (In Blue, cause it's the fastest), Heavy Duty Kick Ash Basket, Mc Farland, WI. :glasses:  B)
If it wasn't for my BGE I'd have no use for my backyard...

Good point.  Mike is also a nuclear engineer.  So perhaps not the best point of reference for “easy”.  I’ll ask the guy at ACE.

I put em on my large. They make a world of difference. And they were easy for an uneducated redneck like me.

Yaaa, that means it’s even easier and peasier for him. I want to know what he can make with that cement mixer. Not the cement that comes out of it, but what he could make that machine into...

Very - just pay CLOSE attention to the pictogram instructions.

I borrowed that cement mixer from a friend, who sadly passed away shortly after. It is from the 40s or 50s I believe, the drum is made of solid steel. All in it tips the scales north of 400 lbs. Tried to return it to my buddy’s wife - she said “Hell no.”

Just because I’m familiar with things like “average logarithmic energy decrement per collision,” “6 factor formula,” and “delayed neutron fraction,” one should not assume I’m smart.

Notice where I mentioned to @JohnInCarolina about it being easy to do if you follow the pictograms CLOSELY? There’s a reason I said that.

Being called a stable genius amongst a bunch of dirt-eating grunts just puts you slightly ahead of the crayon eating Marines doesn’t it?

It's possible I'm a moran, but I struggled putting the new bands on.  When they are packaged in the box, they are wound pretty tight, and I had trouble getting them stretched around the lid of my large.  It could be that my lid isn't a perfect circle.

Anyway, after lots of cursing and walking away a few times, I finally got it done, and I'm very pleased with the new bands and hinges.

I can proudly admit that the first time I did it, I put one of the bands on upside down.  That's when my knuckle-draggin', brute force and ignorance in execution almost took me down.  Had to nearly have an intervention before I realized the Springs wouldn't fit right.  Quickly disassembled, and reassembled.  I wish I had a nuclear engineering bubblehead to tell me to look more closely at the pictures.

One other thing you could do is buy the new bands, then bring them, along with your egg, to a Butt Blast or Brisket camp.  That would be a fun group project.  Just make sure you get ti done before too much marinade gets distributed...  So you'll want to start around 0800

I’ve been meaning to update the bands because they look safer and better.  I hope they’re easier to do the occasional bolt torque check & reset.
