Gasket on chimney?

Just looked at new Eggs and saw that there was gasket material around the top of the chimney (between the egg and the daisy wheel or cap). I’m currently replacing the gasket around both top and bottom and wonder if I should do that. My egg is older and it didn’t come with gasket on the chimney. Also, I purchased the new cap with a rain guard and seems like it might help with a snugger fit. Anybody?

I don't have a gasket on mine, also if using Rutland, your top can go naked...gasket on bottom only

The gasket on the chimney helps keep it snug so it won't fall off. If you keep the original, stick the gasket on the cap.

You could also put a nice shiney rope on. Smokeware is the spot.

For the first five years I didn't have a gasket on the chimney, then I saw someone on here had it, so I've put one on ever since. The material was left over from gasket changes and it just makes it more airtight IMO.

I prefer no gasket personally if using the multi function top and ceramic snuff lid. It makes it more difficult to remove the top when time to extinguish. If you aren’t taking your top, whatever kind, off then go for it. Your local dealer might have tons of the top gaskets laying around as they overlapped in production. There was a time when they both sent a loose one and installed it in factory.

I was in the same boat and my local Ace gave me some spare top gasket they had laying around. Installed it to use with the new cap since you don't have to remove it. Much better setup IMO than the old daisy wheel with no gasket.

My LBGEs did not come with the gasket around the chimney. However, the first time I replaced the regular gaskets with Nomex, I had left over material and added it to the inside of the ceramic cap (not all the way around, but in 3 strips, kind of a -0-0-0 pattern). I found this helps that cap stay on tighter avoiding another humpty-dumpty moment of opening the egg before removing the cap.

My MiniMax came with a gasket around the chimney, and its a bit of a mess. That chimney gasket makes the circumference a little to wide for the daisy-wheel and ceramic cap. So, the chimney gasket gets pushed down and no longer adheres all the way around. I plan on just pulling off that gasket.

My older eggs did not have it, I have since made it a practice to add it every time I perform a gasket change out. I go one further and put it on the top flat section too. Fire snuffs out really fast. I used nomex gasket, it appears to work better than the stuff that came on my later eggs. Here is my last medium change out.

Thanks everyone. I’ll use the leftover material from my gasket change out.

Me thinks you have already received" yes and nos " so the decision is yours!,I have had to cook competition wise with 3 of those stupid dome gasket and I HATE them! I finally wiisedd up and ripped that p.of SH*S gasketpt off...and you know what?? I won $1,000 cash plus one Large BGE which I donated to Easter Seals

Come on Ron, you know a gasket is only as good as the installation? 😀 The bge chimney gasket install is horrible. My mini max one is coming off after very little use. This example on my medium is solid two years later. I secured the nomes with ultra copper, it’s not moving ...

Interested in what you hate about the chimney gasket? I look at it like a carburetor (for those old enough to remember carbs). Sealed up, no air leak. I do have the new cap, so no need for me to remove.

If you use the daisy which I do, then to keep the setting in place when you open the egg you merely line up the two machine screws. Then it is also easy to tweak the setting. But if that gasket is on the daisy has to be pulled off and reset - needlessly.

I didnt have a problem with the daisy wheel. never feel off when opening, never had the chimney gasket and so what if I have to adjust the wheel when putting the lid back down. I havnt tried the new cap yet so Im not sure if I will put gasket on for not. I guess if I see smoke coming out from under the cap or have issue with temp, ill try the gasket. Its easy to get pulled in too all the egg stuff available. Ive just moved my smoker into the open and its rained everyday since. I got spoiled.

OH BOY!!! Its rained a ton here in the midwest and like I said...I moved the egg and its lovely table (all covered with an official BGE cover) into the open. two days ago I took the cover off and the green cap (got excited I have the newest cap to use and new gasket around the bowl) and when I opened it up I had to do a double/triple take! The inside of the lid, the bowl (around the new gasket) was covered with white and grey mold! There was even some powdery yellow mold in the center of my cooking grate. It was cleaned and dry when I put it away. I scrubbed the grate and went ahead and started the fire and ran it hot for a bit but I sure was taken aback. it was hard to take it all in since I was also doing my first cook with the new gasket and the new chimney cap (I loved my daisy wheel just wanted to "upgrade") knowing the thing molded on the inside while it sat there. The new cap also leaked smoke when closed at the time for extinguishing which the daisy wheel did not. I did bring it up hot before shutting it down so maybe things where still burning off. hmmmmm MOLD tho???
  • So there have been a few updates to the Big Green Egg line. Yes, one of them being a gasket at the top of the "chimney" for an airtight fit between the chimney and the rEGGulator. With the new rEGGulator, you don't need to use the ceramic damper top to get an airtight seal.

Speaking of the gasket it is now rated to handle almost 50% more heat than the original gasket and comes standard on all new EGGs (2XL-Mini). If you have to replace one it comes with a new peel and stick backing making it easier to install.

The rEGGulator is also new and some of features include temperature control that far surpasses other airflow controllers for accuracy and ease of use. The patented rEGGulator has an insulated adjustment tab for comfortable use and works with the optional cast iron Rain Cap for all weather cooking. https://biggreenegg.com/product/reggulator/

What is this Rain Cap you speak of, you ask! Well it's designed to keep any wet weather away from the EGG’s top vent opening, and can be easily stored away for fair weather cooking. https://biggreenegg.com/product/new-reggulator-rain-cap/

Here are some other upgrades that come with your new EGG!

Let's start off that all EGGs are now certified to NSF standards for commercial use, so what does this mean?
When a product is certified to NSF standards, it lets you know the company complies to strict manufacturing standards, from extensive product testing to material analyses. Every aspect of a product's development is thoroughly evaluated before it can earn this certification.

3" Temp Gauge is a standard on all 2XL-L EGGs. This new temp gauge also comes with a silicone washer to help seal off any air gaps. This silicone washer is also available on the 2" temp gauge for Med-Mini.

New sleek design band and hinge assembly that features our new acacia wood handle and spring system that makes opening the dome effortless!

All new EGGs come with an enhanced BGE logo on the front!

I don't have the new style cap,"rEGGulator", just the old style daisy wheel, the gasket did come on my medium however. I must admit I find it a pain to try to move it when doing a cook, I have these on my small and mini and will be adding it to the medium and pulling the nomex. They do help to shut it down faster.

Mr. @The_Buffalo , it is great to see you making the sales pitch. These are great upgrades. I noticed the prominent "Big Green Egg" stamp on my latest egg, but I just figured it was on the larger eggs. I like it just fine. It will be interesting to see if the new gasket holds up. Changing gaskets has become the nature of the beast with these things, but it is good to see some progression.

PS - love the reggulator, much improved piece of hardware. And I must say before I anger people, I am not putting down the daisy wheel. But I am putting down the smokeware. 🏃

It's funny, people were putting down the new rEGGulator because it looked similar to an old version of the daisy wheel but once they started using it they realized how much better it is!!

PS - I don't want to come off as a sales pitch just wanted to educate the EGGheads!!

What makes people like the new cap better aside from the rain guard separate attachment @The_Buffalo? I am a daisy wheel user.

I have both. I think if you're looking for medium to large airflow, obviously having 1 large hole to eclipse vs 5 little ones is a bit easier. I do like the rubber tab, but once my wheel was set I really didnt do a ton of adjusting. I can see minute changes being easier on the new cap vs old one, but dramatic differences I dont see...

Ive done three cooks with the new cap and find that there is a hot spot wherever the opening is on the vent. also without gasket it is not fitting tightly or snug. What position should the cap be in? will the gasket help the fit on my OLD egg?
