Done with Royal Oak
I’ve been putting up with Royal Oak for a long time and am finally over it. Just opened a new bag and poured half of it in and saw a uncarbonized piece. Dig through what I had poured in and found lots of half wood half lump pieces. One of these is like 6 plus inches long. Fired up what I thought was ok and it smoked horribly even at 550 degrees. The smoke coming out smells horrible. I’m gonna have to clean it out and start over.

That's tough @Lit . It's hard to pass on the 30 pounds for $16. Vast majority of my experience with RO has been positive.

Agree. I haven’t experienced these horror stories. It is true that Rockwood is a superior product but I haven’t found it to be worth the up charge.

It would appear you got a bad bag. I just got back from a couple of weeks at Mom's house where I cooked on her old Weber and a new bag of Walmart RO. Went thru most of a 15 lb bag and had no problems at all.
Next up, gonna try the Cowboy I bought a while back.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Hahaha, I'm not trying it with anything expensive! Yet. Fish says he uses it all the time so how bad can it be? I suspect much of the negative comes from folks who used it years ago when, apparently, it really did suck. We shall see.

That’s how I always felt in the past but it’s only decent when it’s good and I can get 40 lbs of Rockwood for $40 which isn’t bad and it really is that much better.

Costco has a 35lb bag of Cowboy for 16 bucks or so. I'm really tempted to try it again to see if they changed anything.

I did use Cowboy years ago (one bag) and it sucked right along with Frontier. Things may change however, once you lose a customer it is a hard road to get 'em back even with @fishlessman 's glowing endorsements. ⚓️

I tried Cowboy back in 99. Stuff was made out of sh*thouse doors off a fishing boat. Painted pieces, varnished tongue in groove and moon rocks galore. Beyond dreadful.
Fast forward to 3 weeks ago the Mrs is all proud of herself dragging a 30lb bag of Cowboy behind her she found for $11. Seen it and just smiled. Opened it up last weekend. Most of it looked like wood scraps but it was carbonized. Will use it to supplement "SOB" (some other brand) while cooking or high heat cleanouts.

I have put premium gas into my cars for 48+ years- did/does it make a difference? (mileage-wise per gallon, yes-does it cover the cost? For sure in the old days when it was $.04/gal more expensive even calculating the inflaation). Now with the technology and those high end motors sucking it up at $ 0.60 /gal upcharge I guess it depends on who you want to believe. FWIW- and apologize for the left-turn.
I don't have nor will acquire the gear to assess the related parameters for lump charcoal but as I will tell anyone, I am at the point of simplifying my life. Rockwood does that-no brainer purchase and use.

@lousubcap I agree.... I tried to get cheap with regular gas ( Range Rover Autobiography) and it ran like crap... Only downside, I get 12 Mpg on average... I also agree 100% about your take on charcoal, at this point in my life, I will spend 20-30 cents more per pound to have guaranteed success. I don't care if it's a pork but or Wagu steak, your time and effort are worth something...

I use Rockwood for clean burns too. I used to have space to store a pallet of lump. Having 2 or three kinds on hand was no big deal. Now space is a premium so only use RW.
