Wheel upgrades for large bge

I’m thinking of upgrading the stock dolly’s on my large BGE to pneumatic dualie dollys for stability in my back yard and ease transportation, like if I want to roll it into the garage. Any good kits for this? Any particular pneumatic dollys that easily interchange with the stock BGE dollys?

I'd start with a nest handler if moving the egg around frequently. Pneumatic wheels would work good but it also makes the nest taller and more unstable. I bought some pneumatic wheels and made some base plates for the legs of the nest. I don't trust the nest being that tall. I'd like to cut down the nest and weld it to make it a proper height. Than it just becomes a project at that point. So my pneumatic wheels and spare nest have sat on shelf for the last 7 years.

Does the nest handler fit on a 2016 egg? Mines one generation before the latest.

I've always thought that pneumatic tires could be problematic. What happens if one goes flat? Dunno if anything would happen, but I'd hate to find out the hard way.

For some ideas, Google Image search for... big green egg wheels

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I remember hearing some handlers didn't work straight away out of the box. The nests needed a couple extra holes drilled into them for the handler. Nothing that 5-10 minutes of time couldnt fix.

This way the egg and nest are joined together and being pulled equally with the handler. It will help reduce the chances of something bad happening. I'm not sure how much it will help going through the backyard and heavy grass but at least the egg won't want to pull away from the nest when dragging it around.

Never liked pneumatic tires. My lawn cart has them, and I am always adding air.

I built this nest for my XL with 8” Marathon flat free tires. No maintenance and rolls down sidewalks and driveway effortlessly. The casters were $28 each. Metal was mostly free scrap I had. I roll it over a metal threshold to put in the shed at night.

The one thing to learn is to always pull the egg and not push it. When pulled if the wheels hit an obstruction it will fall toward you making it easier to catch, but if being pushed it will fall away from you making it very hard to catch.

  • I agree with @littlerascal56 . My lawn cart and a dolly both have leaky pneumatic tires. I dislike having to pump up the tires every time before using.

I did this to an SBGE nest.

It's very stable, and won't tip over easily. If you read the thread, @Lit modded his LBGE nest similarly.

No brakes in any of the casters?

@caliking where did you find those wheels?

@HeavyG don’t need them. There’s enough rolling friction on any of the surfaces on my property that it won’t roll unless I’m pulling it.

@DuckDogDr I got those at Harbor Freight. I would think about getting flat free tires though.
