JJ george grill torch
I gotta JJ George grill torch last year to replace my dead BGE electric hoop starter. Works great but it’s a little hard to prop on the side of the egg depending on the coal level. Anyone hook an extension hose up to these and run em into a big propane tank? I was kinda enticing the idea of getting a Loof lighter but I think a big propane tank and hose would be a cheaper option.

I have that torch. Why do you need to prop it on the side of the egg? It only takes a minute or two to light the coals.

I was thinking the same thing as @buzd504
I have been using (1) of the 1 lb camping stove canisters for 1 year so far, and I can tell I have a lot more uses left. Why would you want to be tied to a hose and big tank? Unless you are trying to get to pizza cooking temps really really fast. If that is the case get a real weed burner.
But it is your call obviously. I do not know that you can not connect a hose, I just never saw someone do it. I am sure you could.

Up here in the New England winters it’s cold and damp and even a good part of the summer is damp. I find the only way I can get my egg going minus an electric starter, is to line a layer of vegetable oil soaked napkins under the top bed of coal and then a couple minutes worth of torching from my JJ George. And this is even using a Kickash basket and RW lump.

That looks awesome!

I have the JJ George and the Weed burner setup... I use JJ George almost exclusively as it's pretty quick to get things going BUT... The Weed burner is wicked fast.
The challenge with the Weed Burner is that you have to just barely crack open the valve on the Propane tank or it will trigger the safety valve in the tank. Takes some getting used to.

I use both to light grills. There are times when I grab the weedburner to get the coals going in a hurry, or during damp weather.

I have the jj george and I use a hose with a standard small propane tank. I hang the tank on the table, makes using it really easy. I also hooked it up to a large propane tank with a different hose and it works just fine, but having the option I like the normal small propane tank better

I gotta get one of those hoses. I think having the tank up on the Eggmates would be easier than having it hanging off the side of the egg and lifting the nozzle a little too far from where I want it aimed.

The hose for the small propane tank that I use is the Benzomatic WH159 Universal Torch Extension hose. Paid 4.97 from Home depot

That is 14.97 not 4.97

You guys using the George Michael torches... do you light the lump in multiple places or just one spot?

For me, it depends on how quickly I'm trying to get the grill up to temperature. I light it in multiple spots if I'm doing a weeknight cook after work. Most of the time I light it in 3 places just to get it lit evenly.

I've been using the cubes. How long does it generally take with the torch before you turn it off?

i use the jj george torch and its about 6 minutes total time and i can get it up to temp pretty fast. i heat 3 spots about 2 minutes each.

I light in multiple places. Couple minutes in 3 spots for me too. That’s why being able to hang the nozzle in would be prime for me.

I light in 3 spots 35 seconds each. Gets to temp faster than when I use the electric element starter

An issue I keep having with my JJ george is as my mapps bottle gets less than half full, the pressure drops and in combination with the wide nozzle produces too weak of flame to really get things going good. The wind will even keep blowing it out at this point. I’m wondering if a 20# propane tank and hose would provide better pressure and flame?
-
A 20# propane tank, along with a weed burner similar to the one pictured above by @The_Stache , is what I use. I never have an issue with wind and any startup concerns have pretty much gone away, altogether. The one caveat is that I live in Alaska so I am in a habit of storing the torch in the heated garage when not in use in the winter time. This is because I have found that the hose can get a little stiff, which can stifle the airflow when it is 20 F or lower. So, I bring the torch out from the garage and attach it to the propane tank, just prior to lighting. (Even when factoring in the colder temperature's impact on propane I am able to light in the dead of winter.)

Now that sounds just like what I need. I’ll be ordering one of those then. What hose do you need to go between the 20 pounder and the torch?
-
I ordered mine from Harbor Freight:
It looks like essentially the same one that was linked to above on Amazon, though. It comes with a hose that connects to a standard 20# propane tank. One thing, if you do get this be sure to control your flame with the dial, NOT the squeeze handle. You should never need to use that squeeze handle while lighting. Also, it's a good idea to wear safety glasses just in case your lump crackles and sparks. Gloves as well. Not trying to scare you off, just trying to be safe.

I hear ya. I’ve had lump sparks go down my shirt and in my gloves before when lighting a fresh big load of coal.
