The ice maker in our fridge freezer has crapped out. It's worked for about 7 years, so done well really. The choice is to fix it, buy a stand alone ice maker or just buy bagged ice as needed. What do you guys use? #firstworldproblems.

It’s usually the first part to go. Was it a mechanical or electrical failure? I’ve fixed my water filter line by just swapping out a part, but to fix my water/ice dispenser (and temperature control) requires a part with integrated board that is not made anymore. I’ve been having freezing issues with dairy and produce so I think we’ll be replacing the whole fridge in the next few months. I was able to replace a capacitor and power relay on my 25 year old basement fridge for 8 dollars in parts. Those were the days. Right now, my main fridge makes ice intermittently, based on its choice whether to turn the ice on or off. I use trays in the meantime. I'm worried what HAL-9000 will do when it senses a new one is on the way. Sentient machines are the worst.

I think replacing my ice maker, purchase through Amazon, was about $40, 3 or 4 screws at the most and was completed in less than 30 minutes after watching an online video on a model close to mine.
In some newer models there are other sensors that can cause the ice maker not to work. But for $40 it was worth the gamble and worked for me.

If you have basic mechanical skills, and can get to the rear of your refrigerator, I suggest you fix it.    YouTube is full of tips on how to replace almost every part associated with your ice maker.   Just Google your Refrigerator manufacturer and the model number, with "ice maker not working".  I would start with replacing the electronic water value first.

I know what's broken, it's £65 for the part. Not sure whether to put that towards a seperate ice maker, or just not bother.

Fix it. Still more convenient than separate/stand alone unit.

Today, the PM said she won't put her twice defeated plan back to the house because it will lose, but will not support an open process to get ideas on what could gain a majority. She wants more time to convince MPs to vote for her plan. With our current deadline extension, we have just over 2 weeks until we leave, and no plan.

There will be (an attempt to) an extension, and further political pain.

The EU wants this to be painful and punishing to dissuade other exits.

Personally, I hate Ice Trays, so I would fix the ice maker.  Bagged ice is an option depending on space and convenience.   I have two friends that have stand alone ice makers by their grills and one indoor unit.  They are constantly having to repair them.  I am convinced the cheaper (lower priced, home units) stand alone units are not worth the money.

I find my ice maker a PITA. I don't use it often enough and the ice is usually one giant stale mass. The bourbon ice molds are good enough for me :)

Bagged ice sucks because it's either melting if you store in a cooler or you store it in your freezer and it solidifies into a giant matrix that you have to beat into submission.

Ice makers are great, but there's a big price divide between the models you pour water into a reservoir and those you hook up to a water supply.

They don't have to try to make it painful, just stick to their rules. Our problem is that we want them to bend the rules, all the benefits but no paying in and no following the rules. There are plenty of options according to the rules, but none of them are special enough for us.

I have a big commercial ice maker I'm storing in my Gretna warehouse.  It has a problem that needs to be fixed...that I know how to fix.  I'm just saving it for my outdoor kitchen.  This unit can make like 500 pounds a day and ain't cheap to run.  I'll monitor electricity and if it gets bad I'll probably just fire it up before parties and fishing trips.

    It was free.

Funny timing for this thread. Our 9 month old fridge (that we paid to much for) ice maker is a piece of chit.  Yeah, I know it’s warrantied; but if one of those Opals makes the trip to Aiken, then we fix it, ...

I had to buy a new fridge a couple of years ago, and since they don't seem to make units without the ice maker, I pulled it out before I plugged the unit in. I think it might still be up in the attic. I really don't like ice makers. I also am not a fan of frozen food, so we have plenty of room in the freezer section for bagged ice, which seems harder, chunkier, and clearer that the ice maker puts out. We don't have a problem with the ice getting old and freezing into a solid mass.

It's leaking as well, the ice tray was over filled, probably why it broke. Now water is coming out, slowly, and it's icing up inside. Ordered a new Samsung this morning, not bothered mending it as various plastic parts are broken as well.
