First cracked firebox. Worth warranty replacing?

I’ve given up worrying about the ring since my last two replacements cracked within a week, but cleaning out the large today I see my firebox has a sizeable crack.

Would you replace or keep on egging?

I picked up a replacement a few years ago. I've yet to replace it with the cracked one. Just a little piece of mind knowing it's there when needed.

L.L. Bean had a lifetime guaranty! people abused it now it's gone. It only takes a boardroom decision to eliminate a good thing. If you screwed up bite the bullet and buy a new one. if it broke through no fault of your own by all means use the guaranty.

It cracked under normal use when cooking a pizza, it’s a reality of ceramic

They had the owner on an interview and he was talking about how they had people scouring thrift shops and the estate sales, then they'd heap them in a box and send them in for credit (and none of these people had ever ordered anything with LL Bean.)  Then you could find those merchandise credits on eBay about a week later.

Then, anything they got returned, they would always donate to charity.  They suspected some of those clothes started coming back under the lifetime guarantee.  So they started marking them and sure enough, they did.  He said the final straw was one of his personal shirts embroidered with his initials, that he gave to charity, got returned for credit from someone in another state.

We have dealt with a few crooks abusing our guarantee, but most come through Amazon and eBay since those companies stand behind the buyers 99% of the time.

  • Mine was cracked for a while and just in the last week broke apart. Heading to the dealer today for a new one. Will use the warranty.

So my dealer says if they don't have a fire box in stock that I will have to pay shipping on the replacement. Is that normal?

    No. I don't think so.

Have them ship it with their next order from their distributor. Depending on the volume for that particular dealer, it could be 1 week or 6

That seems to be the case most of the time. However, if you are not in a hurry you can usually wait until your dealer places an order for other stuff and have yours included with it and you get free shipping.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

  • I guess the 2 dealers in my town are the exception then. They never charge shipping. Granted both of them are platinum dealers so maybe that's why.

Did they actually ship a replacement tho, or just give you a spare firebox out of what they already had on the floor?

No I haven't had a warranty replacement yet. But I asked that specific question to them. That If I ever have a warranty claim and I have to get something shipped that's not on their main truck do I pay for it and they informed me that no they never charge for shipping warranty replacements. It may be a case where BGE charges them and they just don't charge me the customer but either way I don't pay out of my own pocket.

  • Seems like it has to go on a dealer stocking order for free shipping. In April that’s not really a issue however in February it can be.

My 10 year old base cracked around two weeks ago (Noticed when putting on new Rutland gasket).  Filed warranty claim with my distributor and they called yesterday that it is in and ready to pickup. It's a pretty large "L" shape crack, probably 6" x 4", but I think I'm going to keep using it a bit before I change out, but this is all subject to how bored I get on weekends without football.

I'm not saying they're related but they're probably related.

I had a crack and it spread pretty quick..... I would just get the new one and use the old one till it finally goes.

I’ve had a replacement firebox for 3 years, waiting for the current one to turn to dust. I’m up to 7 separate pieces so far. My fire ring has another crack, already having been replaced. I’ll make a claim in a month or 2.

Dome cracked on my XL.  Dealer offered to replace when next shipment was ready (free), or have me pay shipping if in a hurry.  I chose free, and had a new dome in 3 weeks.  But I had to give them my cracked dome in trade.

They have been great to work with, but are planning to get out of the BBQ business.  I may end up buying all of their BGE lump stock when they close out the BGE line this spring.
