Used Large Egg - $250

I got lucky yesterday on an egg find. Actually it was Friday night. I was searching online classifieds for BBQ as I do, and came across a large that had been posted 30 minutes prior. I called and the nice lady told me it was mine, and we arranged pickup for Saturday (up by @Botch 's neighborhood, I am surprised I beat him to it
). When I got there, I learned that this was the beloved egg of her father that passed a few years ago. We had a great conversation about what a great man her dad was, and I told her it was only fitting that I name the egg Mike, after her dad.
I didn't see any cracks when I picked it up yesterday, but it was just a quick scan. Today I pulled it out and removed several inches of ash and almost concrete since it has been sitting for a few years, and to my pleasant surprise, there are no cracks anywhere. Not only that, a lot of the ceramic is somewhat white in places, and the gasket has no sign of high heat use ever before. A little shocking for an egg that is about ten years old. I assembled it back together, and put the bag of BGE lump she gave me in it to give it a cleaning burn (like 600ish, not nuclear or anything). It got the meat sweats from the cleaning run. I am excited to give it some use.

great find! Once you get that wood refinished, it'll be like a different egg

Thanks @nolaegghead and @blasting. I did take the opportunity to scrub the exterior while it was blazing hot with some mild soap and a lot of hot water. The meat sweats came right off, and a lot of gunk came off the side tables. I haven't decided if I am going to keep them on or not. I usually keep the eggs between stainless tables, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to leave these on.

I have used that stuff to clean the outside. Works like magic. You really want to make it quick and neutralize it with some vinegar afterwards.______________________________________________I love lamp..

Thanks I will give it a try.
I thought about easy off but was worried on what the ceramic exterior might absorb into it. Not absorb through the porcelain enamel, but through the crazing cracks in the enamel. -
Nice find and great story !!Memphis, TN

Lucky to find such a good deal. I was looking on Craig’s list on Saturday and someone had a used medium but want 1100 for it. I sent an a message to check the price, thinking crap that’s got to be an error. Nope that was correct and it already sold. People in Ohio have the wrong idea on what a used egg is worth. I might put my XL up for sale for $2500 then buy 2 new ones.XL BGE, KJ classic, Joe Jr, UDS x2

@ryantt thats pretty funny. I have a few of those type of KJ's & BGEs for sale in my area with the same pricing. There is a KJ jr that has been for sale for $430 forever here. Its not a stale ad either as they keep refreshing it so that it looks like it is just listed.ryantt said:Lucky to find such a good deal.
