Meijer Meat...to eat or not to eat? That is the question

How is Meijer Meat? I was in there this morning and their prices for a pork shoulder and ribs were really low. I don't want to buy crap meat for a number of reasons though. I usually buy at Costco or the local meat guy for more money and it's usually worth it. What are you Meijer meat thoughts?

Can't say specifically for you Meijer, but my local Kroger (owned by same corp) is hit or miss.  Buy some and see what you think for yourself.

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • Meijer is privately owned in Michigan- not part of Kroger. You are likely thinking of Fred Meyer stores out west which are owned by Kroger (all of these are customers of mine).

Meijer is going to be similar to WalMart in the meat dept. They are all about price and value so you are not going to find primo cuts of meat at Meijer. That said, if you are happy with Costco, you will likely find some things (especially pork) at Meijer that are similar quality. Costco is buying Big Ag mass produced pork from the same places Meijer would (smithfield etc).

The one I shop at has meat that I'd call average to good. Never had anything outstanding, tho' I've only bought from the butcher case a few times.

Aside. Don't know much about crab, but the prices and availability are good for this area.

  • I've converted over to Fresh Thyme meats (Amish chicken, cut their own meat with REAL butchers, choice beef and organic everything)....They should be local to Chicago area (HQ in Downers Grove, IL)
