Greetings friends,
I need an axe for the house. Mainly splitting and making kindling. But I like heirloom quality. Plus, a modest refund this year on overpaying can’t just sit around. I mean — COME ON!
I looked A LOT at the Wranglerstar videos. He’s in love with Gränsfors Bruk (particularly the small forest and the Scandinavian (large) forest). Quality on those, now, may have gone down.
He then recommended a husky that has online reviews that show, time after time, the axe head failing. Not where I want to put MY money..
so. I come to you. The REAL experts on things where I spend ridiculous amounts on things I didn’t even know I needed to begin with.
Suggestions, please.

you need a cheap splitting maul and a small forest/camp ax. any hardware store has the fiberglass handled beater maul. if the quality is down with Gränsfors, theres ebay. with the big axes, you need to try them out, too long a handle and you will miss everytime no matter how far you step back, those are meant to hack down trees, not so good for kindling and splitting. also add a wedge or two and a sledge

Only fellow I knew who used an axe everyday didn't use an axe. It was a splitting maul. He wasn't a very good aim, and broke handles all the time until he found a fiberglass handle that fit the maul.

Found an old post from fish, if you also need to slice a lime.

Husqvarna makes a quality axe as well. They bought out one of gransfors competitors a couple years ago. You could also look at Council Tool. They are made in the USA. Their Velvicut line are heirloom quality. I like their Hudson Bay Velvicut.

I have a fiskar chopping ax that I got for camping. It is amazingly sharp, well weighted and a won’t break the bank. I have read great things about the maul for splitting as well

Check out this guys blog. It's been a couple years since he updated it but he goes into very good detail about several of the axes mentioned here.

Have 2 Gransfors Bruks one older and can't tell any difference in quality. They're used and sharpened regularly. Very good axes and easy to keep very sharp. I don't know of any fall off in quality fwiwNashville TN 2 LBGE's and counting

Doesn’t help with your query, but I split about 2 white oak trees worth of logs with this and a sledge hammer some years ago.

I'm pretty sure I used my 20% off coupon on both of them because I'm a cheap bastard.Works great except on live oak. Nothing works great on live oak. i “preordered” the Gränsfors Bruk small forest and large forest Scandinavian from a Canadian company that did free shipping and was REALLY cheap compared to everyone else. I mean - I couldn’t pass up the deal.
