Hello fellow egg users! I’ve owned my egg for 5 years and have loved every minute of it. However last year 2017 my green egg wood table caught on fire during a clean burn process. The customer service team at BGE was absolutely awesome in helping me replace my fire box that cracked and fire ring.
However now I’ve noticed my BGE has begun to do something that I’ve never heard of or read about on here and I’m looking for some advice. So it only occurs during high heat cooking(aka grilling a steak). It is a salt-like texture that seems to emerge from the BGE through its pores and then a grease like substance will leak below the egg. Keep in mind no liquid is being used inside the egg rather just charcoal a grate and the steaks when this begins to appear. Please see attached pics.
Ive thought my BGE base may have a crack in it however I’ve been unable to locate one with my hand or eyes.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

looks like one of my eggs, happens mostly when its been really damp for a while. next hard rain will knock most of it off

Well to be honest it could be that mine has done it all along mine was just in a table since day one. Now that I don’t have the table it could be that I’m just now noticing it. I’m glad to hear that others have seen this before. I live in a very humid damp area of the USA (Poplarville, MS) so this makes sense.
So is the high heat pushing the grease type mixture through the pores? -

It’s common. Called sweating. It’s caused by moisture in your egg. You likely leave it uncovered and or unused for long periods of time. The ceramics absorb the moisture and it is expelled through the crazing in the glazing. Just clean it off and do a nice long moderate burn to extract the remaining moisture.

It concerned me the first time it happened too. Mine used to live under a very large covered patio and I never had it occur. I moved to where it is barely under a cover, gets wet every time it rains. Now it happens very regular, I guess the second wettest year on record contributes too...BrianFairview, Texas

Only thing I can add is that if you do a lot of briskets and/or butts is to use a drip pan. Briskets and butts can give off a gallon of water/grease during a cook. Aside from the acrid smoke from burning grease when it hits the fire, anything that does not burn can soak in to your ceramics. This can cause your meat sweats as well.As others have said, this is not uncommon. If you light a 500 degree fire and let it go it should push most of it out of there for you.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

I did 4 briskets for Christmas gifts. I did not use a drip pan. I was cleaning the eggs up yesterday figuring I'd do a clean off burn. It smoked forever, not wood, more like grease. I was using the stone and woo from ceramic grill store. The stone kept sweating grease and burning. The stone was even on fire itself. Eventually, after an hour or so at 500°+, the smoke stopped and the stone appeared dry. Could that be the reason? Grease that was absorbed into stone? Sounds very similar except my stone absorbed the grease instead of egg itself.

@Dmb3739 did the briskets have an off taste? Seems like they would absorb a lot of that grease smoke during the cook if you didnt have a drip pan.Milton, GA

The briskets were awesome. I just figured the excess drippings must've absorbed into stone. I'm thankful that I did a clean burn so the future cooks don't have that taste

After many years of use I've never seen this. But as someone suggested, I do use a drip pan for brisket and pork shoulder so all that grease gets dumped out of my bge.XL egg owner, home brewer, jogger, coffee roaster, gamer
