Looking for owner of a small (with small KAB) and a mini

I am looking to see if there is someone that has a KAB for their small egg that could try seeing how it fits in their mini egg?  And possibly take a picture and post it here.  I use two firerings in my mini egg for a raised grid, and looking at the dimensions of the small KAB (https://www.kickashbasket.com/store/product-detail.php?product_id=14) , it might just fit in the mini, but sit a little higher.

If you have this scenario and could post a few pictures, it could help me decide if I want to give it a try.  The small non stainless KAB is on sale right now.  Thanks in advance!

I have a Small KAB in my Small BGE but it will in no way fit in my Mini. Small is 13” cooking grate and Mini is about 10” depending on age/model made.
Small and Mini Max are closer in size?
Are you confusing Mini vs Mini Max?
or I’m just misunderstanding your post.
    Thank you,

  • Thanks @Photo Egg for the reply. Not misunderstanding the mini for a mini max. I have both of them. My interest is what does the small KAB look like inside of the mini. The dimensions of the small KAB show it may fit, although it may be too tall. I have a second fire ring in my mini so that may not matter.

A small / minimax KAB will NOT fit in a mini.

Ok, I does fit into the Mini. But not small enough to fit past the fire ring, or far enough into the fire bowl.

    With fire box removed

  • Thanks @Photo Egg. That tells me what I need to know. I placed an order for one, I will modify it a little to make it work based on your pictures. I appreciate your help.

My concern is that it does not fit far enough into the fire bowl and hits the sides. I tried to use The High Que large grate in my Small. It did not allow for proper expansion and cracked fire bowl unless your mods will fix this.

  • I had cracks in my ring, bowl, and base. So I got warranty replacements and bought the remaining parts and built a new mini. This old cracked mini is going to stay at work and I wanted a way to empty the coals out of the mini quick to cool it down. Like you I suspected it could crack some but I’m ok with that, as the damage is already done. The main mod I was planning on making was to cut the handles down. It’s a $39 gamble at this point, but your pictures helped me see it could work.

Perfect, sounds like a great plan

Of all eggs I wish the Mini had a KAB. That thing is a pain to clean out

@WeberWho, exactly.  This is the reason I am trying to work up a solution.  I have done a ton of searching and short of making something on my own, I couldn't find something that someone else has done.  I considered doing something with expanded metal, but this low price solution is worth a try.

I'm interested in seeing what you come up with

Can't just turn it over and dump it?

Yes but you still need to remove the firebox and fire ring to dump. Plus it gets a little awkward with the dome in the way when dumping. The best way I've found is a Shop Vac. But that just becomes a chore cleaning out.

Old thread, was looking through my threads for something else and found this one.  @WeberWho & @Photo Egg, if you weren't aware, KAB makes a mini basket now.  I bought them a while ago for my minis and they work great:

Much appreciated for the heads up @cookingdude555

This is a game changer for me. I don't use the mini very often just for the fact I don't enjoy cleaning it out. This will make it much easier to clean out. Sweet!
