What’s up with hams this year??

i usually smoke a ham,  @Mickey style, around this time of year. Checked 4 different stores, no Cooks game anywhere. Everything is spiral cut. Finally found an unspiralled shank ham at Randall’s.

What gives??

Doing a couple of hams and a couple of turkeys as we have 24 for Thanksgiving.
I alwas use Cooks but in Costco yesterday and they were serving their own spiral ham.
Linda and i really liked it so we picked up two (and a couple of Butter Balls at $.99 lb).
Over the years I have done as many spiral as reg Cooks and both just fine. We will see how this Costco ham works. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family my friend.

@mickey I usually smoke it your way. Almost called you in a panic when I struck out at the 3rd store! Kroger usually has Cooks hams, but not this year.

Hope you and yours have a happy Thanksgiving too :)

I wasn’t sure how my work schedule would play out so I cheated and ordered a Honey Baked Ham. I know, the shame of it.........

I never understood why anyone would want a spiral cut ham. I like moist ham not dry and crusty spiral cut ham. I get it might have been some cool novelty 40 years ago, but come in.

Enjoy your non-spiral cut ham sir.

No shame here. They are killa....and their bean soup mix is great with the hambone.

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?

Perhaps it’s from the effects of Hurricane Florence.

You know it. Honey Baked is a tasty product.

Fun fact: my first house was the family home of Honey Baked founders. He invented the spiral slicer in the garage workshop. I invented nothing.

@caliking - The scarcity may be due to several factors. First is the problem China is currently dealing with:
    https://amp.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2173653/african-swine-fever-spreads-one-chinas-biggest-pig-farming

Second - Hurricane Florence as @DoubleEgger mentioned above.

    Third from
    https://www.usfoods.com/content/dam/usf/pdf/farmers_report/FarmersReport.pdf
"On the demand side, retail features are focused on Thanksgiving, and export demand has started to improve. The long range forecast is for exports to come in higher than one year ago for the balance of this year. This may support prices during the last two months of 2018.

African Swine Fever Monitor: ASF outbreaks continue to increase, and are now detected in roughly 50 herds and 13 Chinese provinces to date since the initial outbreak.
Progress in fighting the outbreak seems to be with mixed results. With upcoming holidays in China, particularly the Lunar New Year, pork consumption is expected to be seasonally high. It is still unknown how global trade may be affected."

So your local stores are competing in a much larger and uncertain market as price increases are possible.

@SamIAm2 I figured something was going on to have this kind of market effect.

@johnnyp @Mickey 's naked ham method is super simple.

    Ham
    Naked (the ham)
    300F
    Raised direct
Smoke wood of choice (preferably fruit wood)
    IT= 145ish

I've done it differently over the years. Dusting it with DP pineapple head has been my favorite.

Agree. Their hams are par excellent in my book.
