Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington

I'm off to DFW area this week. Looking for recommendations for great local BBQ restaurants. Any "must try" from their menu also appreciated. Also - any shops that have a great selection of rubs and marinades.

Thanks in advance! :)

  • If you’re in the mood for BBQ, my list would be (in order of preference): Pecan Lodge, Lockhart, and MeatUAnywhere

  • For BBQ Pecan Lodge is my favorite by far. I usually get the brisket but everything I’ve tried has been great. If you also like Mexican try E Bar. They have great fajitas

Can’t go wrong with either brisket, beef ribs, and Mac ‘n cheese.

I would add Heim BBQ in Ft Worth. Try the bacon burnt ends, and if you can wait awhile go to Cattleack BBQ in Addison, rated number 3 in the state. For seasonings try to find a Pendery’s. That’s Pendery’s not Penzey’s

  • Cattleack is the best in Dallas, hands down. Only bad thing is it is only open Thursday and Friday lunch

Past thay lockhart and pecan lodge are great.

  • I'll second Pecan Lodge and Lockhart.  Also, I really like Big D in Mansfield off 287.  Before the jokes start, I do mean the restaurant.  Not a personal ad.

Ceramic Grill Stop is up in Denton If you have time. This might sound silly but I have found Buc ee's has a good selection of rubs and sauces. There's one on 35W just north of Ft Worth. You can't go to Buc ee's without buying a bag of Beaver Nuggets.

What part of the area are you staying?
Rockwall, TX  •  LBGE, Big Hat Ranger offset smoker, Really old 22" Weber Kettle, Pile of Pecan and Post Oak...
  • Heim is the only one mentioned that I’ve tried but I thought it was great. Only had time for one meal when I was there but that one was well worth it.

We're a couple nights in  Fort Worth (Omni), a few more in Arlington (Hilton) and then a couple nights in Downtown Dallas. We will have a car so not limited to what's close by.

A lot of good suggestions already.  Heim in Ft Worth for sure. Another in FTW I have never tried is Woodshed Smokehouse, which is a bit more chef-y than it is pittmaster-y.... In Dallas Pecan Lodge is solid as stated. I like SlowBone myself. A lot of people like Lockhart Smokehouse.

  • Railhead Smokehouse at Montgomery and I-30 just SW of downtown Fort Worth and not far from the Omni.  Also Jambo's and David's Barbecue both in central Arlington maybe 15 minutes from the Hilton are both worthy.

Someone mentioned Big D's in Mansfield too....under the radar and off the beaten path, but great Q.  Probably a little more out of your way though than the other options.

Jambo's BBQ in Arlington has a female postmaster if that means anything to you... Also, The Truck Yard in Dallas is fun, if the weather is decent.   Oh, and for rubs & such, Jacksons Home & Garden is great & Barbecues Galore as well. Both are BGE dealers.

IMHO, Lockhart is overrated, as is SloeBone. Railhead is decent BBQ, but ordering an ice-cold Shiner to drink while you stand in line is a huge bonus!

If in Downtown Dallas, and tired of BBQ, check out the brisket tacos at Mia's. Not BBQ Brisket, totally different, but considered one of the things you must eat in Dallas before you die. Another option if youre near downtown is Cane Rosso Pizza, again if you need a break from all that good Que! Get the Honey Bastard!

    Fort Worth:
The Woodshed was good when it opened, not so much anymore.
Joe T's is a tourist trap with mediocre Mexican food at best and there's only 2 choices. I don't know why anyone goes there more than once.
Heim is good and not far from downtown. Started as a food truck and is kinda yuppie BBQ setting. You are better off taking an Uber because there is a serious lack of parking on Magnolia.
Billy's Oak Acres is good low-key BBQ. Haven't been since he moved shop to Camp Bowie. Good food and not mainstream yet.

We take all of our out of town guest to Joe T's for margaritas and nachos, skip the food. @Toxarch is right about the Woodshed, interesting place to go and sip a cocktail and watch people but Heim has better BBQ . Railhead has been mentioned and it's worth a stop. Angelos in Ft Worth is another old school place.

Big Ds in Mansfield is good, but a bit of a drive from North Arlington.

I haven't been to Cattleack in Dallas but friends that know BBQ say its the best

  • Heim's was excellent. Bacon burnt ends were tasty and reminded me that I haven't smoked a pork belly in a long time.  Their potato salad was incredible too! Thanks for the tips - looking forward to trying a few more over the next couple of days. On a side note - Forth Worth is an amazing place to visit. Really wish we had more time here.

Ft. Worth is way better than Dallas. I feel like I can get around the city easier, its less congested, The people are friendlier, its cleaner. Dallas has become a toilet. I dread any time I have to go into Dallas. Almost all of our suburbs are nice. I recommend if you come back to stay in the Grapevine Area. Its centrally located. Come by at Christmas time if you can. Downtown Grapevine is awesome that time of year.

I've heard the Texas state fair is kind of a big deal. We've got people at work taking off work for it.

  • Heim is great and not far from downtown.  Railhead and Angelo's are good options too.  Can't beat their giant iced goblets of cold draft beer sold at VERY reasonable prices. Sliced brisket is my recommendation for all 3 places.  If sides are important to you, I recommend Heim.
