New lighting method needed

I need a new lighting method as my electric starter died about 2 weeks ago and the cubes I have are smokey as hell.  I think I am liking the JJ George Grill Torch - the specs say you have 21" reach with it. It looks like they are coming out with a weed torch and the reach on that will be 35".

Those of you that have the grill torch, ever wish you had more reach with it?  It looks like it works well with a table, but my large is in a nest. Since I will be standing right there and holding it, I am thinking of waiting/getting the weed torch and get the extra 14" for  only $5 more.

I do not care about the $5, but I do not want to wish I got the weed torch if the Grill torch is a bit short. I welcome the opinion of those who have

I hang mine on the front of the egg. It sits perfect that way with the nozzle about 2” or less from the top of the KAB. With a full load of coal the nozzle was down into the coals a bit but that’s fine.
  • This is off topic but if you want a awesome fire starter, in a 5 gallon bucket mix diesel with ashes from your egg or fire pit. Scoop it on your brush pile and light. This stuff will burn on concrete for 10 minutes

I am suprised no one mentioned the Looftlighter https://www.looftlighter.com/en/home/

I’ve had mine maybe 5 years and it is a lot uglier than it used to be (the edge close to the coals tends to bend but in my exprience that has had zero impact on its effictiveness) but it still works great.  The only down side to it is that you have to plug it in.  The BGE distributors used to use them when the did traveling demos of the EGG- I don’t know if they still do but that’s when I got mine (from a local store but you can also get them on amazon).  I use the looftlighter for high heat lights and I use small pieces of fire starter for low and slow.

People on this forum used to really talk up the looftlighter that’s why I’m surprised no one mentioned it.  Some people complained about how the metal bent- that never bothered me and I think if you use it as directed it likely wouldn’t happen (ie point it at the lump without actually touching the lump).  It’s also really fun to use

  • Mapp torch the charcoal directly in the egg for 20 seconds in a few places, close lid and return at the next commercial.  Works great for me.
Do you have bottom and top vents open or closed?

  • i used the jj George lighter for mine and idk if I would want the extra length.  mine is in a table but I have used it at eggfest's and things with no issues.  you can use mapp gas or propane.  the propane is cheaper and for me in a warmer area I have no issues getting it going.  I hold it in about 3 spots for about 45 seconds a spot and you will be at temp in 15 min works great.

I did it! Ordered a JJ George torch this weekend on amazon prime. Should be getting it by Wednesday at least. For those of you that own one of these do you find you can leave the tank attached and it won’t leak?
I leave it hooked-up and haven't noticed any leakage, been using the same propane cylinder for several months now.

Ok good. Mine seems to be holding so far and doing a killer job lighting the egg.

JJ George...Love it.  Just tried mine out tonight for the first time, about 4 hours ago.  Lights instantly and easy to use.  Ordered direct, $35.00, excellent service.

Can’t beat that! I can’t seem to do the light in three places due to coal blasting out when holding the torch but hanging in on the side for a good minute or so in one spot does the trick for me. Then either stirring around the lit coals before closing the lid or just closing the lid anyway seems to do a great job.
