My AR and Woo rarely leave their eggs. I'm in the 90% raised, depends on what it is if direct or not~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

I would guess about ⅓ of the time in each mode: indirect, direct, and raised direct.Cincinnati, Ohio. Large BGE since 2011. Still learning.

If I'm not cooking raised I cook on the kettle.

I'm a neanderthal, I guess -- been Eggin' for years, never raised the grid yet other than indirect with the plate setter legs up, very happy with my cooks.
-
90% raised, usually at the felt line, using the XL Woo and AR Rig.

Great majority raised direct (PSWoo in place) or higher on the extender. Direct (or caveman) for a sear.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

90% raised direct with Adj Rig

Need to buy a cooking grate so figured I would get some kind of rig set up. What would you guys recommend for my setup.

You really should give RD a try. No matter how good your game is, it adds another dimension to your skill set.Theophan said:I'm a neanderthal, I guess -- been Eggin' for years, never raised the grid yet other than indirect with the plate setter legs up, very happy with my cooks. -

Well, that IS the way they sell eggs after al... with the grid in the normal position. If you want raised, just use less lump.Theophan said:I'm a neanderthal, I guess -- been Eggin' for years, never raised the grid yet other than indirect with the plate setter legs up, very happy with my cooks.
That said, most of my egg cooks are raised direct. Very few indirects actually. But I'd be fine if I didn't have my homemade raised grid. I don't have a Woo or AR either, just a second grid on stilts.
With my Akorn Jr, the grid is already at the gasket level and not much room to raise it. Not a lot of distance between an average load of lump and the grid either. And it works fine. I've done a few indirect cooks on it, but mostly just grilling direct.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

All grilling is done raised direct for me.

Not much scope for variation on the MMX, so always close to the fire. On the XL I use fire bricks to get to the felt line because the food is easier to handle. It's done when it's done either way.

Only had my AR a few weeks and have only done direct raised since then. Even with my recent reverse seared tri-tip I went indirect with it on the top grate then removed the oval stone and had the oval grate on a lower rack for the sear. So it was still raised from fire ring level but not much.

I prefer grilling with a two zone set up, with enough space to move protein around. The 26.75 kettle is probably my favorite for grilling.

Never ran the numbers but the majority of my cooks are raised direct. I have bot the Woo and the AR along with the original plate setter and a couple of pizza stones. I can come up with tome pretty strange combinations to get what I want for cooking. Raised, lowered and multiple tiers direct or indirect.Marshall in Beautiful Fruit Cove, FL.

The only time the grid is at 'normal' level is when I'm searing after a SV cook. All others, direct or indirect, are at gasket level or higher.
