Gas conversion

I can't believe I'm even asking this question but has anyone seen a burner to convert a large BGE to gas?
Backstory on this is going through a separation and she wasn't keeping my egg. Had to move into an apartment building for a year and fire laws her ban charcoal in multiunit dwellings. Been here a week and have got in trouble with Super twice for lighting egg. Don't want to get rid of it so looking for a way to use as gas grill for 12 months until I move to a place where I can use it properly.

Sorry to hear the circumstances around your first post. Welcome to the forum.
I have not seen anything like what you are talking about. I am certain that something could be rigged up using gas grill replacement parts from your hardware store. I would just buy a "tailgating" style gasser for now. It seems you don't get in trouble for merely having the egg - its just when you light the egg. Am I correct that the super doesn't mind it sitting there?
You may want to cover your egg when using a gasser so you can't see it cry.
Alternatively, you could use this season of your life to focus on a different cooking method like @20stone mentioned he is doing. I think he said he was going to work on his cast iron game at his next residence.
Good luck to you! Again, welcome!Large, Medium, MiniMax, 36" Blackstone

You could spend $200 and hours of time trying to make your BGE into a gas grill. You will never be happy with it and it will never cook as good a little Weber Q. Just pick up a Weber Q on sale and be happy with it for a year. Friend of mine has one and we have cooked some great food.

This guy in Denmark did it, but there's no parts list or sourcing info.

If you are ok with smoking everything (no hi temp cooks), you could place an electric hot plate on the fire grate, set a 9-10" cake pan on it and fill with wood chips/chunks. Like Alton Brown's flower pot smoker (Google it) except with an egg, not a terra cotta pot. The flower pot works well (I used one before I bought an egg). 250-300° was about the max as I recall. I haven't tried it with my egg, but don't see why it wouldn't work.
I had a 750W hotplate, fine for warm weather, but couldn't fight the winter temps. Get a bigger one. I assume they all have rheostats, you'll want one.
Unless the fire law bans smoke wood too (or the super interprets it that way). It's no different than those smoke boxes you can buy for gassers. I suppose you could skip the smoke wood and just use the naked hot plate, but what's that gonna buy you?
Good luck!I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Sorry about your circumstances that led you to the forum. That said, I echo the above regarding getting an inexpensive gasser for the duration.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Just set a tank beside it and grill on. Are they really going to look that close? Pro tip....don’t throw your ashes over the side. Dispose in a deceptive manor.Ellijay GA with a Medium & MiniMax

+1 on the Weber Q- I cant believe my Gas Grill on my patio has lasted as long as it has but when it dies I am just going to either by the Weber Stand or build an egg table and just use the Weber Q for quick cooks.XLBGE, LBGE, Charbroil Gas Grill, Weber Q200, Old Weber Kettle, Rectec RT-B380, Yeti 65, Yeti Hopper 20, RTIC 20, RTIC 20 Soft Side - Too many drinkware vessels to mention.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting. The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president. -
+1 on weber Q. I dug mine out of a dumpster and have been cooking on it for almost 6 years. Pretty much perfect for quick cooks.Kansas City, KansasSecond hand Medium BGE, Second hand Black Kamado Joe Classic, Second hand Weber Kettle, Second hand Weber Smokey Mountain

The Weber Q will be a great adjunct to your egg when you can use it again. Great place to grill your veg while your protein is on the egg.

I have that burner..The_Stache said:
I agree with others that op should just go gas for the short term, maybe get into brewing beer too.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I appreciate it.
As long as I don't light it he doesn't care that it sits on the patio (it does make me sad to see it though). My egg table is just a little less than 3ft x 6ft so I have its of room on it to put a small gas bbq.
I also think I can probably get away with using my egg in the winter when it will be too cold for him to notice. I'd say the only reason he notices now is because his patio is directly above mine.
I did try and ague with him that between my egg and table I'm into almost 400lbs so the tipping hazard is low and I'm infinitely safer than a a propane leak from a cheap bbq. -
The funny thing is I bet the answer is yes. The lease says no charcoal and no propane fire pits but nothing about turkey fryers and such. I will likely push my luck again in a few months but I'll just leave it sit there lonely for a couple of months.fishlessman said:always love the rules people come up with, ceramic charcoal grill noooo....is a propane turkey fryer ok

when you cook on the gasser add some smoking wood, maybe a piece of lump in there, get him used to the smellsignun said:

I have a webber Q 220 for house by my XL and webber Q 120 in camper. the 220 is by far better as the 120 gets too hot and will not cook coolerI XL and 1 Weber Kettle And 1 Weber Q220 Outside Alvin, TX-- South of Houston

Put this in your egg and the gas connection out the bottom vent:it's $18 free shipping with prime.May not be great for grilling, but should work fine for indirect stuff. Put some smoke wood in foil in the middle.

Just buy a propane tank and hose and attach the hose somehow to the under side of the egg. Make it appear to be gas and continue using as is. They probably won’t know the difference.
-
I'd park the egg and get a Weber Spirit or Q. No need to punish your poor egg because of some douchebag Super and both of those Webers cook great for a gasser.

Get a 17" or 22" Blackstone griddle to set on the table beside the egg.ignun said:Thanks to everyone for the replies, I appreciate it.

Just bribe him with meat you cook on the egg. Hell after you feed him he’ll be bringing you food to cook on it.

Do you want to smoke or grill? Once saw Alton Brown make a smoker with a cardboard box. Using an electric hot plate you could smoke with your egg without a problem. No permanent changes needed so you will be ready to return to lump after you move.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
Just looking to smoke, I picked up a small tabletop grill that sits on the table which will do until I can use the egg again. I'm thinking of buying one of those burners further up the thread.jtcBoynton said:Do you want to smoke or grill? Once saw Alton Brown make a smoker with a cardboard box.
