New patio w/ BGE Cooking Wall- suggestions? (pic of CAD here)

NDG
NDG Posts: 2,435
Crew started today, but time still to discuss & fine tune the BGE cooking wall as seen on CAD here.   Over the years . . I have seen SO MANY beautiful patios with custom built BGE cooking areas . . so any design/material thoughts?  Suggestions for functionality etc?  This CAD shows two cut outs for the Large BGE, and for Blackstone Pizza Oven . . Any response is welcome and I thank you in advance !!

Looks great. Only issue I had when designing mine was wind direction vs. smoke vs. soffit vents. My egg ended up in a nest. I can move it from one end to the other based on weather or wind. I love the brisket smell, wife didn’t want the whole house smelling like it for a 12 hour cook!

Trash management is often overlooked in outdoor entertainment areas. Folks will have a really nice area and end up with a ugly plastic trash can out there that’s attracting flies, yellow jackets etc.

The built-in trash/recycle unit that we installed was a great choice by SWMBO.  Glad I finally gave in :)

@Kevinboatright lighting is inteesting topic - as of now I just have my flood lights that are under the gutter . . too tacky?  I am paying for electrical conduit to the cooking wall (havent figured out how many outlets etc yet) & will have some LED lights underneath the top of the cooking wall's countertop that only shine down.  Also some lights will be around the landscaping  . . . VERY open to ideas !

Great Point !!  See if I can get a quote to add a small built-in trash/recycle unit into the wall.

And for the BGE itself, just rest the bottom of the ceramic on a heat resistant material (stone or polished cemant) will be best?  I plan on selling the nest & wings on craigslist.

I would go over on the outlets you think you'll need, maybe 3 total. if you can get a light near the egg or pizza oven that would make cooking at night a lot easier.

One more thing, if you’ve got kids/grandkids, you might want to look into securing the egg. Tipping is a concern with the open front/back island designs.

The back end with the chairs, is that hard material/stone or grass?  If grass, that's a PITA to mow/trim.

I'm a little biased to shade with a covered deck.  Pergolas are nice, but don't offer jack for shade.

@tarheelmatt thanks for reply . . yes chairs on pavers - here is better CAD angle to show that.

SHADE:  I am with you but we have nice sized screened in porch (check out real life pic) but I am with you about shade.  Looking into the sliding pergola canopys - plus planting new trees (green gians and tulip poplars)

    Thanks for sharing !!

I would look at something that's permanent and flexible so you can adjust and see while cooking.  I don't have one yet but I am thinking of a flexible desk type light.

Looking at this pic, I’d expand the area where the stools are. That’s going to be a natural gathering area for men. I’d have more room to stand around in that area. Wives/GFs will be on the barstools and the men loitering around

Since everything is LED now I dont have to say go with LED.  However Cheap LED is awful for cooking.  No telling how it will make your cooks look under that light.  Ideally I would look for something in a color temperature of 4000K and as high of a CRI as you can find.

As far as under the counter LED- look at this companies stuff very high quality

Throw a beam in the table or have one supported near the table to run some string lights. Plus you can use the beam as a support for a sunshade, or a different hanging light

This^^^ It would also give you the option if you wanted to put a removable umbrella in there as well.

I thought about this some more. This is assuming money is no option.

Increase the area behind the bar area to add more seating and as @DoubleEgger said it’s a natural area for people to group. He also mentioned putting a backing on the Egg area which I agree with %100. I added extra string lights, which again the pole could also double as an anchor spot for a sunshade or umbrella, spot to hang a fan. LED lights on top of the pole for when you need a lot of light at night. The green square is a trash can since @DoubleEgger mentioned trash storage which is indeed a missed item in some back yard builds.  This area depending on the size could be used for numerous things. Fire pit area, storage area, sitting area, dog washing area/outdoor mud room.

Sorry if I’m over imposing on the build, I’m looking into a new home in a few months and a quilty outdoor area has been on my mind for my new place.

Area looks good, I agree you WILL want lighting for night time.  I have 3 fans on my patio and a porch light as well as column lights out into the yard, but when I'm cooking at night on the Egg I will turn on the LED can lights to really brighten it up so I can see the cook.

Also, I had a party shortly after completing my kitchen, there were probably 30-40 people present.  I paid particular attention to where people congregated because the kitchen is just phase 1, I still have phase 2 which is a pool and the hardscape that goes with it.  I was surprised that the guys actually went out into the grass and were on the backside of my kitchen/grill leaning on the counter.  So when I add the pool I will be putting a 4 ft. strip of whatever pool hardscape I choose behind the kitchen grill area.  So, the above post recommending that behind your Egg is spot on.

  • I'm gonna throw my two cents in as well. I work for a landscape company and we design projects like this all the time. Do you use the door to the garage (on the right) a lot? If not, seems like a lot of dead area. I would shift everything to the left and have the kitchen under the pergola. Add a fire pit to the side where the bar is now.

Beautiful !!!  Interesting thoughts - considering to add area behind cooking wall . . But we have a shed that is somewhat close.  Wife concerned an extension of pavers will intrude too close . . Decisions To be made.  Thanks for sharing!

@ChrisSonn23 historically we use this door a lot to let dogs out etc .. BUT to start this project, we had to remove a 90 year old honey locust . . So yard and usage flipped upside down.  Sad part is I agree with you now (after observing yard post tree) But we also don’t want to block the view from the screened in porch on the far side.  Thinking fire pit area might be added in years to come.

Don't know how accurate your shadows are in your CAD rendering but you may want to think about the orientation of the slats in your pergola in order to maximize the shade they provide to folks sitting under it.

    It all looks great!

One suggestion, though, about those chairs lined up at the cook area: In any bar, restaurant, etc., the counter where the people sit will hang over the sitting area, so the people's knees go under the counter, and they can sit right up "at" the counter.  In your design, it looks like there's no overhang.  If you try sitting at a table with your knees NOT under the table, you'll see that you're too far away from the table to be comfortable.  You can't lean on the table/counter, you have to reach way forward to put something down or pick it up.

If you want people to sit there like sitting at a bar or a counter, I'd strongly suggest making a way for the counter to extend toward the chairs, so people sitting there can get their knees under the counter and be closer to the counter.

Otherwise, WOW, it all looks fantastic!
