OT- Split Pea Soup

jeffwit Posts: 1,348
I've had a hankering for split pea soup for a while now. Mom used to make it when I was a kid, but I haven’t had it in years. My family claims to hate it, but I know for a fact that 3 of the 4 of them have never had it, and my wife is often wrong about things. She is gone all day and put me in charge of dinner, so away we go!
Had a ham bone left from Christmas that I saved for this very purpose. I’ll post the pics as I go along. No Egg was used, but here is a picture of some eggs from my chickens to keep the BGE police away.

Started with some bacon in my cast iron skillet. None of the recipes I looked at had bacon, but I figured if you start with bacon in cast iron, it’s hard to go wrong.
When the bacon was done, pulled it out of the skillet and added onion, shallot, celery, and garlic.

When the veggies softened, but them in the slow cooker with chicken stock, dried peas, bacon, carrots, thyme, bay leaf, salt, pepper, and the ham bone.

Thanks for looking, I’ll update in a few hours when it’s done.

And done. Looks like baby puke, but so tasty.

Paired with a beer a buddy brought back from a recent trip to New Orleans.
    Cheers!

Every time I think of split pea soup, I think of Linda Blair. Sorry, the devil made me say it. =)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

One of my favorite soups! Everyone claims they hate it,this is a multiple year deal, until I make it and they can’t stop eating it.

Nice. This had been on my list, but I ended up using my solitary ham bone for something else a couple of weeks ago.

You can do it with out the bone, but there’s just something primal and satisfying about throwing a bone into a pot and cooking it.
