Will a KJ firebox fit a LBGE?
Comments

There are a number of folks here saying that the warranty will not be honoured for the firebox alone. And a number saying that the firebox will crack even if it is the newer model and probably sooner rather than later.
All that's pretty discouraging.
So between those two groups (or anyone else) is there anyone here that has a used large firebox (with cracks but not in small fragments) that is functional and usable that they might want to sell just because they've already replaced it with a warranty firebox?

Back to OP's original question ... looks like a no go ...
BGE bottom is deeper than KJ, but narrower at the base.

Looks definitive, thank you.Canugghead said:Back to OP's original question ... looks like a no go ...

I called my local Gold BGE dealer today. They are discontinuing the BGE line...something about the difficulty of getting parts.
So then I called BGE. When I tried to access the warranty dept, I got sent to voice mail. This was noon Pacific time so it shouldn't have been any later than 3PM at BGE. Sent an email to the warranty department and another to the guy who handles warranties.
Didn't get a response...maybe tomorrow.
So if BGE doesn't offer a warranty on parts and now we know that the KJ won't work, it seems the only viable option is a used firebox...or trash the Egg.
Maybe I'm just "catastrophizing." It will probably all work out.
But I'm not getting a lot of hits or offers for used fireboxes...so I'm thinking a lot of them are probably just as broken up as mine.

Pics of "broken" firebox. Many here have broken ones. Mine was in 9-12 pieces for over a year until I finally got it replaced. Already had the warranty part but, the old broken one worked fine other than a pita to resemble when gutting to clean which is virtually never. I think @fishlessman 's is in at least a dozen pieces by now unless he's since replaced it.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

Newsflash!
Well, I talked to Mr. Bruce Bohannon who is head of the Warranty Dept at BGE, GA., this morning. The long and the short of it is that while you cannot register a Firebox that is bought like I will have to buy it--divorced from the registration and warranty of the full Egg--if you keep the receipt, BGE will honour the full warranty on the Firebox.
And they will sell direct and ship but discourage the notion simply because it is a long, long way to Tipparary ...or Oregon, in this case.

@DWFII - that's GREAT news about the warranty! I was lined up with the naysayers so I'm man enough to say I was wrong!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

That is great news for you. Gives a little more incentive to get your project done when it gets warmer up that way. Glad to hear it.DWFII said:Newsflash!

Thanks to both of you! The firebox is $155.00 (it's ordered) and that hurts a bit--saved up birthday and Christmas and birthday and Christmas again--but relying on BGE to honour the warranty, it's a better deal than the $120+ for a third party fb with only a 6 mo. warranty ...or no firebox at all, not even a used one, at any price.SamIAm2 said:That is great news for you. You both have been extremely generous and helpful. Because of you, I think I can do this.
Much appreciated.

Still looking for the impossible--a used plate setter.

You never mentioned this before. Sounds like some thing fishy to me. -
I am glad Bruce confirmed it for you, and he's not just giving you lip service. I have bought a fire ring and fire box from BGE direct, they shipped it, and I just got warranty service on both parts after 8 years of use (for my mini) . I even got the warranty service from a local dealer.

Actually a man can get by without a ps. All it does is make your egg cook indirect. The same can be achieved using fire bricks. Back here in IL I can buy a box of 6 of them from a home improvement center for a mere $10. You just lay 2 of them down on top of your grate and then use 2 more standing on their edge and then lay an auxillary grate on top them. I think I recall you have a Webber so you already have that auxillary grate.DWFII said:Still looking for the impossible--a used plate setter.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
I’ve got one I’d be willing to part with. No need for it with the AR.DWFII said:Still looking for the impossible--a used plate setter. -

I would be interested...depending on the price and shipping. Would you please email me at frommer@bootmaker.com with the specifics?
