Looking to Build a Large Egg

Hi,

This is my first post and I lurk around here all the time, so thanks everyone for the info thus far.

I have a Large Big Green Egg Dome, Base, and draft door that was given to me.
I've looked into buying the fire ring, fire box, and band from BGE and at that price I feel like i should just buy a new one with a warranty.
Does anyone here have any suggestions for getting those items used or aftermarket?

You will be within a few hundred dollars of a new BGE with warranty if you go and buy each piece new that you need. The pieces you need are actually the least important as in cracking. The base and dome are the deal breakers if they crack. The fire box and fire ring can be cracked in multiple pieces and be puzzled back together and work without issue. Maybe you can find an old cracked fire box and fire ring that people don't need anymore with their warranty replacements. That way you would only need a band.

Where are you located? That might help if someone has any spare cracked parts you could use

Your only reasonable way to finish this project is to be patient and watch Craigslist.com. Or Ebay for local pick up items.
Option 2 would be to list your items on Craigslist and just buy a new one.

I noticed a guy in Houston Craigslist has a dome with band and mates for $150. Maybe he will just sell you the band?

@DWFII, I am not sure. I would call the company to be sure. I watched a few of his videos on YouTube but don’t recall if it worked for a large.
  • Bump for any suggestions from the weekday folks.

I have a large nest and plate setter I could part with for relatively cheap and can throw in the older style band I would throw in.  I don't know how much shipping would be from north Alabama but PM if your interested.

  • I once bought a large Egg that was sold as intact, only to later discover a large crack in the base. Very luckily, the seller took pity on me and accepted a return.

I once sold a medium (used less than a year from new) and only an hour before the deal realized there was a crack in the firebox. I called the buyer and informed them, at which time they indicated they still wanted the Egg, but I provided it for a discounted price.

Realizing the frequency with which Eggs crack, I now own two newly-purchased and fully-warrantied Eggs and will no longer buy used, except if a screaming deal comes along.

In my mind, there is nothing wrong with used Eggs, provided that you are buying them at prices discounted enough to replace several pieces before they eclipse the cost of a new one.
  • The only original part on my 14 year old original egg is the dome. I did buy new bands for it but everything else was warranty. 4 fireboxes, 3 rings, fire grate, a platesetter, a thermo, and a base all replaced under warranty. My egg would have had to be free for me to come out the same as buying new with warranty. Just not worth it for me.

    Good on you.

  • Alrighty,

sorry it took so long to update. I know you guys like pics, so I'll share what I have. The egg is finally fired up and it works like a charm. I wanna thank cen-tex for the pieces he gave me, and for introducing us to valentinas. The brisket was easily the best i've ever had.

Cen-Tex gave me a fire box, a fire ring, and a cast iron top. I went to the local dealer and bought a handle when I got home. I was almost there. Check the egg still sitting in a chair.

I figured I would just get a grate and the pieces to get going but i really liked the idea of the kick ash basket and wanted the pieces to cook low and slow. So I called the ceramic grill store and kicked around the idea of getting the adjustable rig, but i didnt think i would use the multi levels. The man I talked to said the woo matched my needs. So I ordered a pair of 16" halves, a stainless drip pan, the woo ring, a kick ash basket, a grill grate, and a table nest from them. It shipped like lightning and was in in two days.

I headed to the hardware store to get a bag of lump and a temperature gauge. Thankfully prime strips were on sale and made my first cook an easy choice. I reverse seared the strips around 250.

I wasnt really happy with the way the crust turned out but it was delicious. I have to learn to manage the heat better. The low and slow part went great but i couldnt get the searing stage hot enough. I have some learning to do.

This thing was probably going to sit in it's chair for another year or so if it wasnt for Cen-Tex, so I appreciate his generosity.
