Hello all eggheads, new to the forums, first time bge owner and very excited. So last week my birthday was on the 9th, I got home from work the day before on the 8th and saw this sitting out in the back yard...
My wife surprised me with a new XL egg. I was shocked, she has heard me talking about the bge in the past and got some help from an uncle picking the size. Instantly my favorite grill I own and can’t wait to cook on it for years to come. She also got me the plate diffuser since I mostly enjoying smoking. Any other accessories you guys recommend?
Happy to finally join the forums after frequently visiting and reading around some in the past.

Welcome. enjoy the journey.
There are too many accessories and too many opinions to count. I'd recommend using the egg as-is until you can gauge which accessories will actually be useful.

Congrats on good wife and the Egg!
I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

First accesory I recommend is a thermopen or a thermopop. Wait to decide on the rest.

Welcome aboard, Mate! Life will never be the same. Enjoy. The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

As a relative New guy myself, welcome aboard this train wreck. the regulars here are perhaps the funniest SOB's I have ever not met in person. If it were not for their great advice and really humorous comments , which are absolutely unrelated to anything BGE related....I would drop this site like a festered boil on my buttocks.

Wow, great gift, congrats! As someone who has purchased a number of accessories that I regret purchasing, I’d advise you to spend some time reading posts on the forum and watch for accessories that you really believe you’d use before you consider buying. If possible try different cooking techniques before buying as well (for example you might find you prefer to cook ribs flat on the cooking grid as opposed to buying a rib rack). I think I must have bought like 4 or 5 beer can chicken or turkey accessories before realizing I preferred to drink my beer and cook my birds spatchcocked.

Forget retirement. You now are inflicted with BGEism, a widely known condition that causes massive weight loss of your bank account, while creating significant weight gain on your credit cards.
The initial purchase of the BGE is the least expensive aspect of owning a BGE.
You have been warned.
Get a membership to Costco for your protein purchases, aluminum foil aluminum pans, and alcohol, get a membership at Restaurant Depot for tools such as sausage makers, knives, cutting boards, slicers, etc., find a great carpenter for building storage cabinets for spices and rubs, dedicate storage space in your garage for a minimum 30 bags of lump, and cases of smoking wood, (cars, bicycles, yard tools do not need inside storage space, you will learn) build that second garage, (because your wife's car needs storage space, you will learn) keep a land scaping company on retainer, because you will buy another BGE and you will need to modify your patio and yard, adding lighting for the evening cooks etc., go to your appliance store and get a deep freezer, then go back 3 months later and get the bigger one you talked yourself out of, then a year later get the big one (your third) you thought would be ridiculous to buy in the first place, build yourself a decent wine cellar, second fridge, audio and visual system for the time you spend with the BGE, new patio furniture, find a Lodge cast iron outlet, oh, yeah, almost forgot, start the planning of the remodeling of your kitchen. Do I even need to talk about coolers yet?
But most of all enjoy every step of this crazy journey, because it is worth it.
