I drove for an hour and a half on Friday to an Ace to buy Rockwood. The purported 3-bag option may be worth it - depending on the price and shipping.
If you're in Suwanee, there should be at least a half dozen within 15 minutes, including our #1 in the country......John's Creek Ace.  I'll be there next Saturday for their Eggstravaganza if you're in town.  We'll gladly ship it to you, but you're sitting right in the middle of prime territory for us.

@stlcharcoal so am I to understand Rockwood is available in Cali now?  Is it strictly through Ace hardware, or can I order online? No Ace locally here.
Yes, as of 11/1/17, it's available *to* California.  We haven't shipped any yet, but the first load leaves on Tuesday for the warehouse in Sacramento.  So hopefully sometime of the week of the 13th, Ace will be taking orders and start to shipping to stores........and we'll be shipping direct to homes.  I searched "Central Valley" and came up with two stores called Hardware Express (one in Shasta Valley, the other in Redding.)  Those close by??

I'll try to make my way over there (John's Creek ACE) to say hi!!

The DudeThis is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

  • Any places in Central Florida that you guys sell at stlcharcoal? I've checked the Ace around here but they only have BGE brand and the main egg dealer around here only carries Fogo and BGE for steep prices. I'll gladly order direct but if I can save on shipping I'm all for it.

Not in stock but I bought two bags at my local Ace (Cocoa, FL) using the SKU @stlcharcoal provided in a previous thread. Got here in 3 days. YMMV.

If you look on our website, all the locations that usually have it on the shelf or listed......but any Ace can order it and have it in a few days.  It will show up on the same truck as the rest of their weekly restock.  SKU is 8400772.  Hopefully by Friday, our online ordering will be up and running.  Then next week it should be available on AceHardware.com for nationwide "ship to store" for free.

Sorry, we don't really do that anymore.

A real common complaint was that the lump would get hammered during shipment. Will this be somehow different?
  • Order in!  Was down to 1/2 bag

We're about to find out......  :/

We could put a single bag in refrigerator box filled with packing peanuts and it's still going to break down.  Just like potato chips and breakfast cereal, it's the agitation that does most of the damage, not the shock.

So we took a page from Firecraft and used a tall box with two or three bags laid flat.  But where they had extra space for other stuff, we eliminated that and they fit in tight.  The idea is that they should is be pretty well nested already since they already travelled flat on a pallet for 120 miles.  If we take them straight off the pallet flat, keep them flat, then cut down the box side to eliminate any free space, their should be hardly any wiggle room......lots of surface area touching to spread the impact or weight.  I don't know if that will hold true, but that's the hope.

I have a theory that if lump charcoal bags were vacuum sealed that there would be practically no jostling/breakdown of the lump.

Somebody should give that a try. :)

    Yep...Rockwood in Cali. Who'da thunk it! :)

Still takes a lot to swallow the $10K+ worth of invoices for lawyers, printing plates, insurance, and bag redesign in order to make this happen.  Hopefully they like it out there, because that's a lot of bags to pay for one state's compliance.  Took six months and a lot of people to make this happen.
That is just one reason I’ll be relocating to TX before too much longer.   So much political BS here to cut through to do business in CA.

@stlcharcoal - Is PayPal the only payment option, or am I missing something? We have a PayPal account, but I rarely use it, so I don't remember the login creds. That means I have to go upstairs, attempt to locate my wife's password list on her desk, which is no minor feat...

Thanks for doing this, especially the discount code, even if this is only a one time kick the tires thing for us it is appreciated. I could order thru our local ACE and have done so previously but thought I'd give this a try . Choice is good. ;)

I never reported back. Firecraft did well by me with my large remaining gift card.

Still great people working there.  Just a shame it didn’t last longer for our needs in egg accessories, because they were great.
