DigiQ x2 worth it?

hey guys,

Getting my first BGE in a couple weeks and now planning what accessories to get with it. Looking into the DigiQ X2. Was wondering what you all thought about it and if it’s worth the extra $230 for it. I’m getting an egg for the ability to stabilize the temps for long smokes, among other reasons, so was just wondering if you all thought it was a neccessity or a luxury. Will the egg hold temps well overnight without it?

Just my suggestion. Learn to control it without a crutch and you will always be more confident with your cooks. The only time I use a controller is during turkey season when I know I won’t come out of the woods till a certain time. That’s with a large and I have an xl at home. A controller is nice but not a good first solution in my opinion. Others might disagree.

Agree on no controller. Certainly not now, maybe not ever. I waited a year or more, then bought one. Almost never use it.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I agree with the others above. I love my temp controllers and they give you a nice piece of mind for overnight cooks. I wouldn't go and buy it right away. That's for 95% of any accessory for the BGE. Give it some time and see what you actually need with the BGE. You might find yourself wanting Wifi with your temp controller down the road. If you want to buy something before your BGE find yourself a good remote digital thermometer. (Thermapen is the most popular by far here) It's a tool that will get used every cook.

Give it some time on the temp controller. Get to learn the egg and how low and slows work. I've ran into electrical issues a few different times at rib events where too many people tried plugging into extension cords where it became problematic for anyone's temp controllers. I was glad that I knew how to dial everything in and run it without any type of controller.

Welcome to the forum! Ask away with any other questions. Always someone here willing to help

I say get one. Have had mine for years and even though I only use it on overnighters and day cooks if I'm going somewhere it's nice to have and not have to worry. I have a brisket on right now that's coming off soon and I slept great last night. If you are spending the money I would suggest one you can check from your phone like the cyberq it would be great to be able to check temps and adjust if need be overnight. I run my guru with a igrill so I can check meat temps from bed but last night I knew my cook was running slow and I would have bumped the temp from bed if I could have but I was too lazy to walk downstairs and change the temp so now I'm sitting around waiting on the brisket to finish.

Offers great stability and peace of mind.  Worth the cost IMO.

A controller isn't need and I would learn how to use the egg first. With that said I have owned the digiQ and now own the Flameboss. Both excellent devices, the only reason I went with a controller is I can be away from my house for several hours when I cycle. If I am home I generally don't use one.

For not much more you can have a brand new wifi enabled unit with multiple meat probes, auto-updating software, a variable speed fan, a large backlit 32 character screen, etc.  FlameBoss 300

DigiQ is 10 y/o technology with a 4 character calculator type screen......one meat probe and fix speed fan.  It works fine, but no one is going out and buying a new iPhone 4 for $500 when you can buy the newest model for another couple hundred bucks.

You already committed to the Kadillac of Kamado's, do the same with the temp controller if you go that route.  You don't need it, but you don't need the Egg either.  Learn to manage your Egg manually, but have one so you can sleep over night and not worrying about losing $100 worth of meat.  Only takes 2-3 times for that to happen and you've paid for the controller.

  • Is the only difference in the flameboss 200 and 300 the option for multiple probes? I noticed they’re both available for the WiFi model.

No, there's a lot more, but it's "under the hood".  They made some improvements to the circuit board on the 300 to fix some earlier issues, plus added a WiFi direct capability.  Basically the unit can act like a router, directly connecting to your phone or tablet for the app.  It doesn't need to go through the FB server, thus have an internet connection.  This is especially useful if your home internet or router crashes, their server crashes, or you're at a competition or camping where you can't get internet but still want to remotely monitor within a few hundred feet (much larger range than Bluetooth.)  Also lets you direct connect for initial set up--no more scrolling to enter the WiFi password.

300 doesn't look like it from the outside, but it's a big improvement from the 200.  Even though you may never need the multiple probes, you should always have backups, since they are the sacrificial parts.  So, you back up meat probe can be used as a second probe if you ever need it.

Love them!  Just got in a dozen in preparation for Black Friday and the webstore going live.  I was a dealer for all the other brands and it was a nightmare whenever something was missing out of the box or we needed tech support.....embarrassed me in front of the customer too many times.  Flame Boss is hands down the best and their customer service is only second to ours  (haha!!)  On the rare chance you need to call them, these folks will make you glad you did.

    Controllers are nice to have.
    Absolutely necessary? Not really.
If you need to buy one, the FB300 is the way to go.
