Dead Maverick

I've been using my Maverick less and less lately, but decided to bring it out so that I didn't overshoot temp on my 2.8# tomahawk ribeye last night (like I did on a rack of babybacks last weekend). It wouldn't turn on, so I pulled the batteries and lo and behold one had leaked, just a little. But apparently enough to ruin the unit: new batteries were a no-go.

What are the preferred wireless thermos now for monitoring grill temps?  After 2 years I still can't set my vents accurately to hit a target temp, plus my XL has a tendency to creep up.  I tend to light it, get it close to target and then get involved in something and forget to check - with a remote thermo I'd do a better job.  Anyway, what do people like?

    You have multiple issues here.

I feel you need to get back to basics and figure out why your temp is creeping up.   The egg is generally a set it and forget it device.   Air must be getting in somehow if temps keep climbing. When you snuff the fire atthe end of a cook is there a reasonable amount of lump left based on how much you had when you shut it down?

Have you checked for cracks,  gaps where done meets base,  and is your vent assembly sealed to the base?

Using the egg without being able to control temp is no fun, and as you stated, you ruin expensive groceries and disappoint hungry family and friends.

There are a lot of threads on wireless thermos in here. Do a little searching.

Thanks for the suggestion, kl8ton. When I snuff the fire goes out pretty quickly and I have plenty of lump left. But I'll check for gaps, cracks, and seal.  The dome/base seal seems good. Prolly more a matter of me getting back to basics and paying better attention to what vent settings yield what temps.

Sorry for the loss of your thermometer. I'm looking at either a Fireboard or a Thermoworks Therma Q Wifi. I can't decide. must do more research.

I wonder if the lithium batteries would be more leak resistant?

I'm on my third different thermo, the Thermoworks Smoke and I highly recommend it.  My Maverick lasted three times, and the other (whose name escapes me) about four.  It sounds like I'm hard on my toys but that's not the case.

I really like my Smoke!  It's built well and love the lanyard.

  • I love my Fireboard.  Support is great, product is great.  They are also busy expanding the capabilities.  It has multiple ports.

I think the XL creeps up because of the thermal mass of the Egg soaking up heat. Once you get the Egg itself fully hot, the extra heat from the fire that was heating up that mass starts to raise the temperature. I start faster now, rather than creeping up to temperature and then get a really stable cooking temperature with minimal drift. It's down to practice / trial and error.

Thanks, @Eoin - I think you may be on to something there. I have my biggest problems trying to hit 300 - 350 on an indirect turbo cook.  I'll try starting faster, but I'm always afraid of overshooting - takes forever to bring 'er back down.
