Platesetter cracking
Comments
-
Very rarely do they break without help imo. Odd for sure. The temp is no issue.Abarnette said:I bought my XL egg in May, a few weeks ago I noticed a hairline crack in my platesetter. The store I bought it from replaced it no questions asked very painless. I have used the new platesetter maybe 3 times at less than 450. I went out today and noticed a hairline crack in the new platesetter. Has anybody else noticed a bad batch of platestetters. The people at the store acted like they never crack. -
Mine is 8 years old and hasn't cracked yet, though I don't do all that many indirect cooks so less use than some folks. I haven't cooked a pizza in my egg in over 4 years, but I have done a few at 900°.
That said, I've seen plenty of reports about platesetters breaking. The people at the store are wrong.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Mine cracked after about 8 years of heavy use - not too many very high temperature cooks, though. This was in a large BGE. Since it wasn't covered under warranty after 8 years, I decided to replace it with an adjustable rig - very happy with it.

Yeah the people didn't bat an eye at replacing it but they looked at me like I brought them a cracked anvil. I was just curious because before I bought the egg I was worried about storage of the platesetter since buying it I realize I use the platesetter so much it in the egg half the time. So i am worried that I am doing something wrong.Carolina Q said:Mine is 8 years old and hasn't cracked yet, though I don't do all that many indirect cooks so less use than some folks. Maybe a cast iron one is the way to go

Maybe you might be on to something I will look into itWoodchunk said:Maybe a cast iron one is the way to go -
Sure, because cause CI PS are indestructible and don't crackAbarnette said:

PS comes with a 5 yr warranty. If it cracks etc during regular use then it is covered. Unless of course you're just wanting a CI PS.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL -

Thanks for the info on the 5 year warranty thing when I showed it to the people in the store they didn't mention how long the warranty was good for they just handed me a new one.NPHuskerFL said:

When I had the XL, my platesetter had pieces chip off within the first year of owning it. Warranty claim and my dealer replaced it without issue. I had a hairline crack in my large platesetter and that was also covered under warranty."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. @Carolina Q I have CI grids on all of the BGE's. Had one crack when I first bought them almost three or so years ago. It was replaced under warranty and hassle free. My whole point was everything under the right conditions can break whether it is cast iron or ceramic. I guess it comes down to personal preference. That said, I have had several ceramic PS crack or break while under normal use.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

My XL broke the first year, right down the middle, although, I think, it may have been the result from when the cast iron fire grate exploded, and pieces from that hit it."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

Leg cracked off of my PS after 3 years 3 months of moderate use. Defintely not user error.1 LBGE in Chapel Hill, NC

My opinion is every egg part will eventually crack. That is based on owning six eggs going back about 10 years. Every year I replace a ceramic part or two on one of the eggs. Its tiring really. I wouldn't stress a cracked part, BGE builds in plenty of profit into each ceramic part, they know they will crack and the warranty is part of their profit model.

@Carolina Q my bad Michael.

Mine also has a hairline crack in it. I am going to use it till it completely breaks.

I've had my plate setter in steady operation for 3 years and I noticed what appeared to be a hairline crack in it 2 years ago.
To date - in continuous use with no failures.
If it falls apart, I'll get a new one.....no biggie.
