OT...Streaming TV

Has anyone used Sling TV or DirectNow TV or used both?  Opinions of them? Is one better than the other?  I am over these cable tv bills that keep going up and nothing worthwhile to me is added. Trying to decide if switching to streaming is a better choice.

Roku is pretty good.  Also, I think you'd be surprised at what you can receive with an OTA antennae.  Lots of stuff on Amazon Prime and Netflix too.

Here's a link to a recent thread that has me looking.  My challenge is that all I watch are news (both left and right of center) and live sports so I haven't moved off bottom-dead-center.  FWIW-

  • I’ve been using YouTube TV for the past month, trying to decide whether to cancel my DirecTV service.  The channel selection is good (all networks, ESPN, Disney, Fox Sports 1, etc..), with some notable absences (for now) being Comedy Central, TNT, NFL network, HGTV, and the Food NetworkK.  You stream from a tablet, phone or PC to a ChromeCast or AppleTV.  If it’s available in your area it’s worth doing the 2 week free trial.  When you pay for the first month, they send you a free ChromeCast.  It’s $35/month, including unlimited storage on the very good cloud DVR.

We have been using HD Antenna and Roku for the last year and a half. No regrets. I like Sling TV, can add and drop channels at will. Add all the sports packages for College seasons and then drop them afterwards. As I said, no regrets and I don't miss cable at all.

I have DIRECTV and Apple TV. I use Apple TV because it pairs well with my iPhones and IPads.

I have DirecTV and my brother has YouTube TV. He likes it except for a couple of missing channels. I was thinking of dropping DirecTV until I talked with one of their online reps about a problem and at the end he gave me big discount on my bill. Takes a week to get them to respond but apparently they are able to give big discounts. Was worth the wait. The bill is still a more than streaming, but streaming cuts into bandwidth. You can go through a lot of bandwidth quick with a couple of people streaming HD videos. So check your internet service first.

We went to Amazon Fire TV with the PlayStation Vue app. Love it. Get all the news, sports, and local channels. Can also add/delete individual movie/premium channels.

I haven't posted in a long time, but can't resist. I cancelled direct tv and have had SLING for about a month. I really only want to watch College football and NFL. Sling has great options for this. I am very pleased with it. I purchased a couple of antennas for watching games on the Networks (ABC,CBS etc).  The reason i tried it is it is half the price of direct. It really comes down to how fast your internet is. I debated for a long time before i did it and wasn't sure it would work , but it does. Again, it comes down to how fast your internet is.

I just replaced DirectTV and Infinity Comcast with Metronet. Now that I have 1GB of fiber I am going to test Sling and Hulu. I have the Amazon Prime Firestick and love it.
Now that local channels are available on these streaming services it makes sense to start looking at alternatives.

I have Roku 4 and a Apple TV 4. I much prefer the Roku. The Apple remote is a really poor design, The Roku remote is well designed. I think I've heard that the new Apple TV that is coming out has a better remote design that the Apple TV 4 remote.
I use the Roku 100% of the time.
I have Directv Now and Sling. Between the two, the Sling service is easier to use and more reliable. I got into the Directv Now service early on, back when they would give you an Apple TV 4 for prepaying for 3 months service. At that time Directv Now was not available on the Roku. The Apple TV is just sitting unused.

I have the 100 channel package for $35/month on Directv Now for life. Even with that deal. I'm still considering canceling, I just don't like the app interface, and the service is just not as smooth as the Sling TV service. The Directv Now interface reminds me of my old cable tv channel guide.

I went steam only and over the air antenna almost 5 years ago and it has been a good experience for me, I don't really think I'm missing out on anything.

You guys are so lucky.  I just ran a speed test (11:30 am on a Sunday) and my dowload was a sizzling 0.47 Mbps. The best I've seen is around 2.5. the joys of living in rural America.

@55Kevy... I'm with you... At least I can burst up to 6MBPS but still have a cap on data plan... Still way worth it to live rural and away from the "maddening crowds"!

  • I have Playstation Vue.  You don't need a playstation to run it and it probably has the best assortment of channels to date.  Everyone is getting better though.  I am interested in HULU's new choice and youtube is looking pretty good too.  I have been using it for about a year now and we had all of the devices and settled on the fire tv as everyones favorite.  Seems fast and the remote is nice.

For the longest time I was lucky if I got 5 Mbps. Now my little town of 1100 people is putting in gigabit fiber service by the end of the year, partly because AT&T Uverse changed their minds about coming in. There's a company (with a poor reputation) providing the service, but the speeds blow away anything else available in the area. That's why I have been more interested in the "cordless" TV options.

I got rid of Directv back in April.  Switched to Firetv and PS Vue.  Everyone in the family has been happy with the switch!  Great selection of channels, no issues streaming. Have not regretted it for a moment!
