OT: New iPhone? OT

My iPhone 6 is a full3 years old, has a scratched face, and freezes frequently when trying to use any data. What is the general opinion? iPhone 8, iPhone 8plus, iPhone X. The various Androids are out of question due to commonality with the iMac  that I am currently typing and my extensive iTunes library. Since all three are capable of 4K video, I think that I will have to go one notch above the entry memory regardless of choice. The 8 plus has a better camera and larger screen while being a couple of hundred cheaper than the X. It also still has finger print ID. The X would not be here before mid November and I would hate for the present phone to die first and kill my trade in price.

Comments

  • I would get another 6. Maybe a 7 if the headphone jack doesn't matter to you.
  • I'd hold out for the X unless you absolutely can make it a couple months without a new phone d/t the problems you are having.

iPhone X is going to be next to impossible to get until early next year. They aren’t starting production until mid October and can currently only produce 300,000 per month. iPhone 8/8+ share same internals as X except for form factor, screen and improved front facing camera. I went with an 8+ because I didn't feel like beating my head against a wall trying to get an X this year and I’m coming from a 6+ so it should be a nice upgrade. I heard Apple was having yield issues with the screens and think next year model will have most of the bugs worked out.

The 8 and 8+ are supposed to be sequential upgrades to the 7(+) so even consider a used 7 or hold out for the X.

Basically it's the same phone with some added horse power

  • I just got a 6s a few days ago. Did not want to spend extra $ on stuff I don't need. Also wanted the phone jack. I did get the 128mb one.

  • Personally, I'm going with the 8+. Facial recognition and talking emojis are on the back burner for me. I've always ordered the latest and greatest iPhone every year - just not overly impressed this year.
  • So far I am thinking 8 plus with a memory upgrade . Face recognition doesn't impress me. I think that the new processor is needed to run IOS 11 properly. Mainly if I seem to take all pics with the phone then I should invest in the dual camera which leaves out the 8.

I am NOT a tech person. I like things that work. (ie the egg) prior to iPhones I had Nextel phones. Currently have a 7, the lack of a headphone jack is annoying, but otherwise it's a solid phone. The 8 is the same phone with a better camera. Can't speak for the others.

I'm not an iPhone guy, but I really don't see the passing of the 3.5mm headphone jack as a big deal. I can't recall the last time I used it, Bluetooth has replaced it. If I were going to get one of the new iPhones, it would probably be the 8+. Unless I already had a 7+, then I'd wait out this upgrade cycle. iPhone X needs to get at least one rev before I'd consider it.

This. In all my life using phones for music, I think I have plugged headphones in twice. Only ones I use now are wireless BT ones for running. Otherwise, I just stream music on a low volume. I suppose that I am privileged to have my own office at work.
  • I use headphones for the gym. If it doesn't play in all of my neighbors headset bluetooth is good enough. I've been bluetoothing my music to my car radio for years now.

If I could wait one more year, I would  but my 6 might let out all of it's magic smoke at anytime.

SWMBO pre-ordered the 8+.  I think she's getting delivery next week.  Through Costco.

I have the iPhone 6... has honestly been a bad phone for me . I need an upgrade soon and will be abdoning the complete apple ecosystem.

im by far NOT a "tech guy" .. i still love my MacBook Pro however hate the phones

The main reason for me is ihave found inneed expandable storage (Micro SD)... if something happens to the phone I can at least pull my data... pics and files as long as stores there.

this iPhone has a mind of its own and will often not sync despite being directly connected to the Mac.

As an Apple stock holder, I think you should upgrade phones every year.

One guest on CNBC today described the 8 as more of an extension of the 7 line. He said they should have just named them the 7s and 7s+. However, there are some upgrades that people might like such as face recognition, better cameras, faster processor, and wireless charging. If you have a 6, then upgrade. If you have a 7, then decide if you need those options.

Now, as a Samsung owner, I will say that I really like wireless charging. It's almost as fast as plugging in for fast charging. I keep a wireless charging pad on the night stand. Just set the phone on the pad and go to sleep.

  • All 3 have wireless charging, only the X has face recognition, I don't need face recognition.
  • I just got the Galaxy Note 8 and love it.  Stylus is extremely handy and the thing has more memory than I'll ever use.

I'm going to hold out for the iPhone XXX, which promises to have genital recognition.
Oh it has a zoom lens?

  • My wife is still happy with her 6S. I was too until I broke it, but I'm very happy with my 7.

Looking at Apple's site, a 7 starts at $549 while the 8 starts at $699. So if you consider that a significant factor I'd get a 7. If not a big deal, the 8 looks great to me.

Save the money and go with the 7+.  12X Zoom capable, portrait and with IOS 11.0 faster Siri and several new features.  MicroPlug headphone jack is a thing of the past...

When you're ready for your next upgrade hopefully the X version will have been sufficiently patched to have some higher capabilities.

There was an interesting article in WSJ on Monday on exactly this topic.  Might be worth a read... https://www.wsj.com/articles/iphone-8-review-not-the-upgrade-youre-looking-for-1505818800

Let's see Facial Recognition... so someone grabs your phone and points it towards your face and unlocks it?

That is how I tried my first iPhone, my Blackberry Curve work phone died. They offered me an iPhone 4S, another Curve , or an Android to be named later. I went for virgin territory and took the 4S.
