Awesome picture! Smoking ribs with scotch on my hands is a good BGE day! I need to find video of the process likely enjoyable to learn about.

Does Rockford spark more or less than BGE? Thanks.Ex LBGE owner and current BGE liker

Gotta put in a plug for Fogo. I get it on Amazon (Prime) currently $56 for 35 pounds. When it comes UPS it gets delivered to my door. If USPS I gotta go pick it up. Always good sized lump and very little dust. Lights easily and burns clean.

The sparking is usually part moisture content and part of the amount of char dust/powder on the charcoal. It's going to vary from bag to bag with any brand, and where you are in the bag.bjeans said:Does Rockwood spark more or less than BGE? Thanks.

Did some math for price per pound for lump. Here's what I've come up with:
Rockwood: $1.25
Fogo: $1.60
Green egg: $1.57
Royal oak: $0.84

I think Royal Oak can frequently be had for less than what you found, but to me Rockwood is easily worth the extra dough.Stillwater, MN

I'll look for Rockwood, but I'm very satisfied with my USA-made a Royal Oak. The price is perfect, and it's always available.Love cooking on my XL BGE for 2, 12, or 100!

Love royal oak, I don't understand the hate. I am also a very big fan of kamado joe charcoal, but it has the premium price like rockwood and some others. I stock up on my charcoal only twice a year, Memorial Day and Labor Day. My last purchase was 240 lbs of Weber natural briquettes for 5.88 per 20 lb bag. Reviews of it have been very good. My charcoal is now unbalanced as most of my stock is briquettes, but I use lump the most because of my kamados. Ive used natural briquettes in kamados and they are fine, hopefully my lump lasts until next may, but the briquettes may see some use in the egg occasionally.

I used about a 1/2 bag of Rockwood to do a 16 hour L&S, on my XL, then raised the temp to 400F to do a couple rounds of chicken legs. Had about 1/4th left of what I started with. It likely burned from lighting to snuff about 20 hours.
Clean taste, easy light, very little ash. For your money, and all the other advantages, not mentioned in this response, you can't beat Rockwood. Dependable and consistant, good size chunks, just a great product for the money. I have tried others, and there are good brands out there, I have yet to find any better than what I use now.

My first guess would have been "on sale" or "clearance". But who knows unless you ask. Good job! (I get your sentiment, though).pgprescott said:

Thanks, guys. I've had basically no sparking with BGE, but someone said in his experience it tends to spark most around 15-20 (?) minutes, (or maybe at really high temps?), and I close the dome within a couple of minutes.DoubleEgger said:

You guys are missing 2 of the best lumps there is. First JEALOUS DEVIL & NATURAL ORIGINAL. JD comes from Paraguay. And is a axe breaker wood.
Natural Original comes from the Ucraine. Its a mixture of Apple, Cherry & Oak. Its outstanding. Only 2 charcoals that I buy at this time. You eggers need to up your game. Also these are 2 of the hottest burning charcoals on the Naked Whiz site.

Yeah, both of which have stolen copyrighted artwork and photography off our website. If they're so great, they could surely afford to take pictures of their own charcoal rather than stealing/using pictures of ours. -

Same here. Going to HD now for the $9.88 twofer. Got my 10 bag fill. They were down to their last skid. I just got in. Apparently they sold out, then found the skid somewhere this morning.cookingdude555 said:Love royal oak, I don't understand the hate. Keep plenty of both K and RO on hand. Others are around too, OO, WG, Ono, Chigger Creek, Charbroil CC, but they're collecting dust.BrandonQuad Cities

Royal Oak is 9.99 at walmart for the 17lb bag, so $0.59 / lb“There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body.”

What's baffling to me, are the complaints of smokiness. Come on now, neutral charcoal? You're one step away from converting to LP. Lol
I egged a crisp a few days ago with RO. Couldn't taste any off flavors many complain of??? I do give my eggs a longer preheat than most. I pick a target, and let it cruise until I'm ready for it, not the other way around. Seems to be working just fine.BrandonQuad Cities

There's smoke and there is SMOOOOOOKE! I had burned through over 100 bags of RO with zero problems. Happy camper with no intention to use anything else. I usually add wood chunks so I like smoke. No joking, when I used the bag of non-USA RO a neighbor pounded on my door thinking my house was on fire.Focker said:What's baffling to me, are the complaints of smokiness. Dang tootin. Nothing worse than bottom bag smoke. Sometimes it's so bad it peppers the meat with charcoal dust.1voyager said:
