Bought a 45 yesterday and taking 2 five lb.Butts (frozen) , 50 Wings (fresh), a 5 pound Pork Belly (frozen) on a 600 mile road trip to VA for our grandson's 1st Birthday  :). Do I still need to add ice, if so how much, or can I just use a frozen ice pack or two? Not cooking the Butts until Friday and the Belly and Wings on Saturday. Thanks.

make sure you pre-cool the cooler the night before or it wont stay cold.  I would pack it with ice still to keep things cold the day of the trip.  I suppose you could use a couple of frozen packs then pack the rest of the air space with towels to keep it as tight as possible.  If you don't pre-cool the cooler or you have a lot of air space then don't function nearly as well.

You definitely don't need ice, throw a couple of ice packs in for peace of mind if you want but unnecessary. Butts will still be partially frozen.

I usually bring the cooler in the house the night before and open it.  That morning I fill with Ice Packs and close for a few hours.  Then I just load it and go with those same ice packs.  Good for me.

I would think 15# of frozen meat would still be pretty dang solid when you got there.  But you have the room- throw an ice bag in as well.

Get a pound or two of dry ice. Be sure to wrap it in newspaper. No mess.

I frozen milk jug of water the night before... No worries. Don't open it.

  • We traveled 250lbs of beef on an 8+ hour drive in cheap $15 igloo coolers with no ice. As long as the cooler is completely full and the meats start off frozen you should be fine in a yeti (pre-chill to be safe)! With ours we only noticed a couple of 1lb tubes of ground beef starting to thaw at the lid of the cooler only (again very cheap quality cooler). Sounds like some great cooks to come, enjoy!

If everything is frozen, and the Yeti stays closed for the trip, you should have no problems. We did a 575 mile and it was still frozen.0

I'm a fan of dry ice - it's quite a bit colder than water ice and it just disappears as it warms up.
I brought two bushels of blue crabs from Kitty Hawk to Indianapolis in a Coleman with dry ice and spent the night in a hotel, in late August, with that cooler in my back seat.
Still had a small piece left upon arrival, so I know the temp inside stayed below 32ºf. Had a nice ring of frost around the lid, letting me know that the Coleman is not the best at sealing, but the frost layer did help seal the top and keep warm air from getting in.

Total time was a little more than 20 hours. Dry ice is about -70ºf so we put it at the bottom of the cooler, cardboard on top, then the crabs. That way the coldest part of the cooler was the bottom. If you put dry ice on top, it will get your contents much colder, but won't last as long.
