How Often Do You Calibrate?

How often does everyone like to recalibrate their dome thermometer?  Mine is usually a little higher than my DigiQ (10 degrees possibly).  I have only calibrated a couple times since owning my eggs. It is usually pretty close to the DigiQ, so I don't mess with it.

What dies everyone else do?

It's not very often. Maybe once a year. Maybe.  I let the gauge spin freely without the clip so I don't worry as much about it getting out of whack.

Also, test your probes on DigiQ. My stoker probes were 40 degrees off.

I will recalibrate after wrapping the needle around the gauge, which hasn't happened for quit some time so I am about due for the inevitable brain fart. If you twist the gauge taking it out for any reason you also run the risk of throwing it way out of whack.

I'm on the other side of the spectrum.  I will check the calibration before any L&S cook unless I have done one within the last week or two.  I run w/o the clip and have only adjusted one of them around 5*F in the past several years.  But I am a big proponent in "believe your indications" as that is what I run with.

How did I use my Thermopop recently.... After the lightning event taking out my downstairs HVAC unit something didnt seem right.  HVAC guy found out where in the programming it was to adjust and now we are spot on.

I have had my egg for a year. Is it simple to calibrate? If my memory is correct doesn't it need to be done with boiling water but I'm not sure.

Boiling water is the easiest way to ensure accuracy

Yup- get some water boiling, insert thermo and note reading.  Use nut on the back to adjust out the off-set and then recheck.

I don't know the answer to the original question, but I certainly appreciate the reminder. It has been about three years since I last calibrated, so I did it this afternoon. In a pot of rapidly boiling water, my Thermapen read 211°F which is fine at my elevation above sea level.

The Tel-Tru dome thermometer read 220°F and that was an easy adjustment. Turning the nut maybe 1/16 of an inch did the job.

My Maverick 732 read 214°F and since I don't know any way to adjust its calibration I figure a few degrees won't hurt.

So, in three years my dome thermometer drifted by eight or nine degrees. Still well within my tolerance.

Bought my egg in 2012.  I'll calibrate when something seems amiss.
