OT: now be honest! Does a premium vodka REALLY make a difference in a Bloody Mary/Bull? :OT

call me cheap if you want, but I have never understood paying $35 - $40 for some tasteless vodaka when a $9.99 bottle of SKOAL seems the same to me. Care to enlighten me?  =)

No. Smirnoff or stolli for mixers here. Waste of money otherwise. Make sure it is triple distilled to avoid impunity hangovers. The rest is excess.

They've done head to head studies and good old Smirnoff beat all the top shelf stuff.

In a Bloody Mary I fully agree there is no difference.  However, on the rocks or in a martini a huge difference

No, bad liquor = bad hangover. I'm a big fan of fine booze, but not all fine booze is expensive.

The first one or two there is definately a difference in the taste. After that the differences are minimal until the next morning...(hangover/heartburn on many vodka brands)

Stoli for me. Titos at places that don't carry Stoli.

It depends on how strong you make them. I like to taste the vodka some. So yes it makes a difference. Do I use grey goose and kettle one, no. But titos is my go to. The cheap shiz, yes it does suck.

Ron, you want next level bloody marys?  Next time you cold smoke cheese, empty a couple ice cube trays into a cookie sheet.  When you're done, freeze them back into ice cubes for your bloody marys (also good with bourbon.)

Ron can't live on anything besides the priciest Vodka!

Yup...that's why I have never spent more than $9.99 for a half gallon!

The only difference is your flavor preference. I have worked in the industry for years. The only thing that affects your hangover is the amount of sugar you consume. If you drink enough for a hangover it will be the same no matter the brand.

I've never understood vodka.  The more times it's distilled, the "finer" it is, yet that means the more other volatiles (flavors) are lost.  It's really just alcohol and water, right?

Sorry, but Tito's is crap vodka. Some people love it but it tastes like crap vodka to me. Crap vodka=crap bloody Mary. Smirnoff is fine for Bloody Marys. You don't need top shelf, but it won't hurt. The cheap crap will hurt.

  • I use Bowmans in a Bloody Mary. Works fine especially if you have refilled your Grey Goose bottle with it for the party. Amazing how easy it is to fool "vodka experts".

If I want good taste it's a good bourbon neat.

Vodka is intended to be a neutral spirit. So yes.

I hear you, but seems to me like a lot of unnecessary work when a drop or two liquid smoke would achieve the same or even better results.

Most of the time I drink Kettle One, but if cash is low I get Smirnoff instead.  There is a difference in the two, but it wouldn't be super noticeable in a Bloody Mary.  I would never, ever purchase that 10 dollar crap in a plastic bottle.  I'd rather not drink at all than to put that stuff in my body.

I must disagree about the plastic bottle.  I assume your wife has never found you passed out beside the egg with burnt food still cooking with a GLASS BOTTLE    =)
