The Chicken Ranch Is Now Closed

Well, the Chicken’s have finally flown the Coop.  Yes, Wednesday, June 14, 2017, a day like any other day.  Except on this particular day, we turned our favorite breeding grounds, which we called the Chicken Ranch, over to another flock to enjoy.

They will likely call it something else because it no longer resembles its former glorious hangout for fun-loving Eggers.

And the famous Chicken Coop is just another gazebo, although two of the famous Chicken Ranch ‘Girls’ elected to remain there: Maggie Mini and Lulu Large.  I’m sure they will fit right in with the new owners.  Lola, Shirley and Mini-Maxine decided to go east with us.

Lily, being the free range type she is, took up with a very happy neighbor who has frequently taken advantage of her talents.

After the official transfer of ownership, we immediately entered the familiar migratory path along I-10 toward the traditional wintering grounds in Louisiana for the last time.  We arrived without incident or fanfare at a temporary nest that had been recently vacated by another flock.  We shall remain here while we prepare our final nest for occupancy.

Leaving the Chicken Ranch was bittersweet and heavily laced with sadness as we took one last look around.  We couldn’t see the now empty Coop because of all the memories that got in the way.  They were reminding us to never forget the fun we had there.  Fun that was frequently shared with every Chicken Ranch Loving Egghead in the world.

It was a fun time and now it’s time to create new fun in Covington, Louisiana, our new nesting grounds.

Thanks to everyone who took us under your wing, and shared your own EGGsperiences with us over the years.  Thanks also to all of those who contributed countless items to the Chicken Ranch.  We have most of those that survived packed in nesting boxes for perhaps a new mission.

And for those who have our card, we no longer respond to that phone number or that email address.  We will announce new ones when we get officially accepted into the community.

Now to learn some Cajun words to get by on.

I'm sorry about the sadness.  It sounds like it was a very heart-wrenching move, leaving a place where you have had many years of wonderful times.

But there will be wonderful times in the new place, too!  And HURRY BACK here to re-connect, and share the adventures of your two Eggs that are still with you and eager to get going on some Egging again!

Relatives, closer to home, age, new adventure, encroaching crime, tired, and other reasons.  But mostly it was time to move on to somewhere.

It'll be cool to live closer to family. I had to ask because Louisiana isn't on the list of top
retirement destinations. At least you've got a big lake between you and Nolaegghead.  ;)

You folks take care of each other. We will miss you in Salado and Athens.  Do you remember when I grilled the chicken feet for you at Salado a few years ago? Your first response was "what the hell are those?" Several folks loved them. Thanks for the great cooks and good times.

So, one might say they are free range chickens now?

Happy roosting. Must be hard to leave the nest but I'm sure there is good scratching where you are going.

You moved to Louisiana to avoid encroaching crime?  Lol, this is where it encroaches from.

Chicken Tractor!!! I had to look it up.  According to Wikipedia:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tractor

Good idea. I could bring my own Coop to Eggfests...  But then, I would need to buy food to cook, cook it, and serve it to folks who just came to eat.  Then clean up afterward before the long drive home using my gas.  Naaaaaa!  I've been peddling that bike for a long time.  I think I'll 'coast' for a while.

    But I learned something new.

You might find a comfortable chair in the shade of someone else's tent, happy to share it and a cold beer just for the pleasure of yours and Judy's company.

I hope the move treats you both well.  We'll miss you at our little soirees, but will drop in next time we are over that way.

It has been a joy to read of your egging exploits with the fun and intersting way you tell the stories. I have tuned in to a bunch of your Youtube offerings as well. I am certain you will soon be back doing similar things in a new location. And will find intersting ways to make these new experiences special. Best of luck to you both!

I wish you all the best in your new coop. I've always enjoyed your posts and will be looking forward to see how you've settled in. BTW, our beach neighbors across the street have a chicken tractor in their yard. It's big enough for 4 hens. They move it around occasionally and get their grass fertilized. It's genius. Next time I'm that way I'll get a picture to post.
