Heard a loud "pop" while cooking. Am I in trouble?

Was searing some steaks around 650. Standing over the grill with the lid open I heard a loud ceramic sounding pop noise. First good once over I didn't see any cracks, but was wondering if I'm likely in for a world of hurt....

Probably cracked your fire box which will be evident when it cools down and you can move the ashes around to inspect. If you are the original buyer then that is under warranty. Many of us here continue to use broken fire boxes. Once one of mine was in 5 pieces and held together by gravity. Stuff happens!

Do you have a cast iron grid? Those are notorious for cracking. And you can hear them when they crack. Don't ask me how I know.

    But i's probably ceramic. Warranty...

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

If it is ceramic and your the original owner, no big deal, regardless of what it actually was. . My advice is to enjoy eating the steaks you cooked, and have a nice glass of red. Time enough to inspect it tomorrow and then if need be send Bruce a couple pics.

Michael, as new as his egg is I believe even a BGE brand cast iron is warranted, but since he did a visual inspection a broken grid should have been obvious to him. Just the same I've never understood why BGE hasn't dropped that cast iron grid design with the circular outer ring! When the inner grid gets hot - especially at red hot searing temperatures - cast iron, which is weak anyway expands and the expansion is confined to that colder outer ring and that stress has to be relieved somehow and POP goes the Weasel (BGE cast iron grate)

Don't tell anybody, but this is my Kamado Joe, not an egg. You guys are just a good wealth of knowledge.
After it cooled I took it all apart and inspected all the pieces and didn't see anything. I bought it used so hopefully I'm in the clear.

It could have just been a piece of lump popping.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Exact same thing happened to me two months ago or so.

Early cast-iron wheels, both for vehicles and machinery wheels, were often formed in an "S" shape to relieve just that type of thermal stress.

As long as you're grilling with your Egg closed, however, I wonder if that type of stress even occurs; the Egg is supposed to keep heat steady throughout.

I hear you, but when I replied I had assumed he was using a BGE and BGE brand cast iron grate. Plus when he said he was searing and had the dome open and was at 650 then his grate temperature just might have been higher than 650.

Well then, a fox in the hen house, so to speak. Seriously, from the perspective of the BGE warranty. If you cracked a 'bought used' BGE firebox or any other ceramic part and experienced a crack in the ceramic part; when you bought a replacement from BGE that replacement would carry a warranty with, you, as the original owner. For kettles, domes, fire-boxes the warranty is life time. Maybe KJ has a similar program. worth a look, I'm thinking. You will have to stand the cost this time if it ends up being damaged but next time could be a different story.

Doesn't KJ warranty not matter if you are the original owner? I believe I read that somewhere before.

The folks at KJ say: "Kamado Joe warrants that all ceramic parts used in this Kamado Joe grill and smoker are free of defects in material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the grill."
