Looking for New Brand of Lump

I've been using Humphrey Lump for a few years exclusively. I've arranged some bulk buys and have been able to get 20 lb bags at around $9 per bag. The price is tough to beat. However, with my last two buys the lump seems to have changed. It seems to take longer to burn off the VOC's and I am getting more ash. Does anybody have any recommendations for good charcoal at this price point. I've proved Rockwood but at double the cost of what I've been paying, that's pretty tough to swallow.

You can get RO close to that price point at HD. I'm a RW snob. Good luck brother.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

I burn tons and tons if royal oak red bag from walmart and home depot. Sometimes i get the smaller gray and green bags from menards on sale.
When I burn in, voc's are gone within 20 minutes, smoke clear at the 30 mark. I like it.

For that price point I would stay with Humphrey's and recognize the change. May be just a bad run. You may want to contact them and see if anything has changed in their process. Nothing to lose.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

@lousubcap thanks for the input. I contacted them after the first bad batch and they said they had used a lumber source from Mexico. They said that they had problems with that batch. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and went with another bulk order. More of the same a year later. I'm going to contact another company in Tennessee. Anybody ever heard of Parker Charcoal?Mark Annville, PA

I haven't been able to find RO at walmart lately, but like @bgebrent said, you can get it at Home Depot for about $9 for a 15 lb bag. I've been pretty happy with the results.

@Biggreenpharmacist What do you pay for Parker's?OKC area XL - Medium Eggs

I think its a little less than $20 a bag. Not cheap but its better than RO and cheaper for me than RW.

I have to make a trip to Jamestown to check out Parker... Ozark Oak was my favorite and if @Biggreenpharmacist thinks it's a good replacement... I'm in.
Besides... living in TN it's a good reason for a road trip...
Note:... Living in TN, I have not heard of Parkers...

I have a friend who contacted them and they were willing to sell in bulk if he picked it up. His trip fell through so he didnt get over there. I would think if you are close it would be well worth the trip.

I called them today to see if they would ship to Pennsylvania. I live near Hershey so we aren't exactly close. I left them a message. When I order from Humphrey, they ship it to a trucking terminal and I pick it up there. I like to support smaller companies if possible. That's why interested in ParkerMark Annville, PA
