Cookbook, etc. recommendations for a family member

So, a family member's birthday is coming. Recently, he's made a few references to wanting to take up cooking/barbecueing in his retirement. I thought I'd equip him with a set of some of the basic necessities, to help him in this endeavour.

I've purchased him a Thermopop and figured that a few other goodies could be of use to him. Primarily, I'm thinking that a cookbook covering some of the basic principles of cooking/grilling and featuring simple recipes may be beneficial. I'll likely also want a few other goodies to throw in (e.g., sauces, rubs, etc.).

Anyone got a cookbook recommendation to fit the bill? Would be best if it was simple. Also open to suggestions of alternative/supplemental gifts.

Thanks!
